Bejoy Nambiar believes Solo would’ve worked better if it was released directly on streaming platforms!

‘Solo’ has to be one of the most ambitious films in Dulquer Salmaan’s career so far. Directed by Bejoy Nambiar, it was an anthology made simultaneously in Tamil and Malayalam. Though the film was released amidst huge hype, it could not meet the expectations of the general audience. It was an experiment that didn’t work but director Bejoy Nambiar firmly believes that the film would have worked much better if it was released on any OTTs.

In a recent interview to Film Companion South, when asked if he thinks ‘Solo’ would have worked better if it was released directly on streaming platforms, Bejoy concurred with that. He is quoted saying, “For sure, it would have found its audience. Right now, its streaming on Netflix.. but may be it would have been a better fit.”

‘Solo’ was conceived as an anthology of four stories. Each story is based on the basic elements of water, wind, Earth and fire. Dulquer plays four different protagonists, Shekar, Trilok, Rudra and Shiva, who all are basically the various avatars of Lord Shiva. During its theatrical release, majority of the audience were critical of the fourth story and its strange climax. This widespread backlash forced the makers of the Malayalam version to chop off the climax portions. Bejoy Nambiar and Dulquer Salmaan was unhappy with that and they came out clearing airs that the changed ending was done without their knowledge. Although the film failed to connect with the majority, the attempt to try something out of the box was appreciated.
