Censor Board denies permission to screen Parvathy’s Varthamanam

The regional Censor Board has reportedly denied permission to screen Parvathy’s new film ‘Varthamanam’. It is directed by National Award winning filmmaker Sidhartha Siva of ‘101 Chodyangal’ and ‘Sakhavu’ fame. The board officials have alleged that the film’s theme is anti-national and could destroy religious harmony..

Sandeep Kumar, a member of the board had tweeted that the film touches Muslim – Dalit persecution at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The tweet was deleted later. After the regional censor board denied screening permission, ‘Varthamanam’ team is expected to submit the film to the CBFC revising committee in Mumbai.

‘Varthamanam’ has Parvathy playing a character named Faiza Sufiya. She is a research student at the JNU. For the last few years, the university has been grabbing nationwide attention over the several political incidents and protests occurring in the campus. The film is actually inspired from these true events. National award winner Aryadan Shoukath has scripted it based on the current socio-political issues in the country. He is also producing the film along with Benazeer of Benzy Productions.

Roshan Mathew, noted for his roles in ‘Moothon’ and ‘Kappela’, plays Parvathy’s romantic interest in ‘Varthamanam’. Veteran Siddique will be seen as a college professor named Podhuval in the film. Sudheesh, Nirmal Palazhi, Dain Davis and many other non-Malayali actors are also part of the cast.
