Mammootty’s stubbornness did wonders for Pokkiri Raja

Pokkiri Raja starring Mammootty and Prithviraj was released in the year 2010. The movie marked the debut of director Vysakh who recently directed the all time blockbuster Pulimurugan. There is an unknown story behind the movie Pokkiri Raja.

Vysakh had initially planned to make a academic level movie with Naren in the lead. Mammootty was asked for a guest role in the movie. After reading the script, Mammootty said that he will not do a guest role instead he assured that he will act in a full fledged role.

Upon the directions given by scriptwriter duo Udhayakrishna and Sibi K Thomas, Pokkiri Raja was changed from an academic level movie into a mass entertainer. This stubbornness of Mammootty worked big time for the movie. Pokkiri Raja was one of the biggest blockbusters of that time.

Mammootty played the character of Raja, a don in the movie while Prithviraj Sukumaran played his brother Surya. The movie also had Nedumudi Venu, Shriya Saran, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Salim Kumar, Siddique, Riyaz Khan and many others in supporting roles.

Pokkiri Raja was produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam under his banner Mulakupadam Films. Due to the huge commercial success, Pokkiri Raja was remade in multiple languages.

In Hindi the movie was titled as Boss while it was titled as Bhai in Telugu. Akshay Kumar played Mammootty’s character in Hindi while Nagarjuna Akkineni played the role in the Telugu version
