Police case filed against SS Rajamouli for hurting caste sentiments

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has taken the box office by storm. The movie, released last Friday has already crossed the 500 crore mark worldwide and is all set to become the highest grossing Indian movie ever.

Meanwhile, a police case has been filed against director SS Rajamouli for allegedly portraying the Katika community in bad light and hurting their sentiments by allegedly using a caste slur.

Members of the Arekatika Porata Samithi filed a police complaint the director in Hyderabad for the caste slur. According to reports, the community is offended by a particular scene in the movie where Katappa played by Sathyaraj says dialogue, which the group claims as a caste slur.

The group has also filed a complaint with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) requesting the censor board to immediately remove Katika from the film.

Their complaint reads,
We Katika people indulge in the trade of butchery, to sell meat of goats, sheep and hens, to provide healthy food to the society, as part of our livelihood. We are not harsh, inhuman and anti-social people as the movies tries to portray us. We have become a synonym for any anti social activities. Even in schools and colleges, our children are facing social stigma.

This is not the first time that the Baahubali team had to face such issues. Prior to the release of Baahubali 2, pro Kannada groups called for stalling the movie’s release citing a controversial remark that Sathyaraj made 9 years back. The issue was only resolved after the actor publicly apologized for his statement. During the release of Baahubali The Beginning, a few caste groups in Tamil Nadu had filed a case against the makers after a particular dialogue in the Tamil verison hurt their sentiments.
