But of late, South Indian movies are also slowly entering the race and giving stiff competition for Hindi movies. Here we list down the top 10 highest grossers in Indian cinema for the year 2016.

1) Sultan

Topping the list is Salman Khan’s Sultan, a sports drama directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. The movie once again proved Salman Khan’s authority in the Indian box office. Last year the actor produced a similar success through Bhajrangi Bhaijaan. Sultan collected around 588 crores worldwide. The box office returns from India alone account to around 300 crores (net).

2) Kabali

Superstar Rajinikanth’s gangster flick Kabali is the second in the list of the highest grossers. The movie was directed by three film old Ranjith. Kabali was expected to be a complete mass entertainer on the lines of Bhaasha and Padayappa, but it was more of an emotional drama. The humongous pre-release hype of the movie was and the massive promotions helped the movie collect big at the box office. Kabali grossed around 350 crores worldwide.

3) Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Marred by controversies prior to release, ADHM directed by Karan Johar finally found success at the box office. This multi starrer had Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan in the lead roles. This movie was another typical Karan Johar story about love, lust and friendship. Like other KJo movies, ADHM was also a great success at the overseas market and subsequently the movie ended up with collections of around 236 crores worldwide.

4) Airlift

When we look at commercial successes, this year ultimately belonged to Akshay Kumar. Three of his movies are among the top 10 highest grossers.
