Barroz: Mohanlal’s Challenging Directorial Debut Could Be His Last, Reveals Santosh Sivan
Cinematographer Santosh Sivan, known for his award-winning visual expertise, has hinted that Mohanlal may not direct another movie following his ambitious 3D fantasy film Barroz. As the film gears up for a December 2024 release, Santhosh Sivan shared the unique challenges and ambitious vision behind this project in an exclusive interview with OttPlay, marking Mohanlal’s first attempt at directing.
In the interview, Santhosh Sivan described Barroz as a “tricky film” that caters to children and steps away from the usual “mass” appeal. The story incorporates a blend of African, Spanish, and Malayalam actors, creating a multilingual narrative that may require subtitles for Indian audiences. Despite its non-traditional structure, Santhosh Sivan believes the movie will be “fulfilling” with fantasy elements to captivate younger audiences.
Santhosh Sivan praised Mohanlal’s organic directing style, noting how he approached the film from the heart without relying on conventional shot references. This spontaneity, however, comes with significant challenges, including the complexities of 3D and IMAX cinematography. Despite Mohanlal’s unique approach, Santhosh Sivan suggests that Barroz may be the superstar’s last directorial venture, as he seems disinclined to take on such a demanding role again.
