Drishyam becomes India’s first regional movie to be remade in Chinese language!

Indian movies enjoy huge popularity among the Chinese audience. The whopping success of movies like Dangal and PK is a template to the potential of Indian films in this region. Now, a Malayalam movie is all set to make a mark in the land of red dragons. Yes, Mohanlal starrer Drishyam is getting a Chinese version and the deal was inked today by the makers.

Jeethu Joseph, who directed this all time blockbuster informed the proud news with a live video in his official Facebook page. Incidentally, Drishyam is the first regional movie from Indian to be remade in Chinese language. The screenplay rights were sold to a Chinese production company, whose representatives were also present with Jeethu Joseph and Antony Perumbavoor in the live video.

Drishyam, released in 2013 emerged as the highest grossing Malayalam movie of that time. It is a family drama cum thriller in which Mohanlal and Meena played the major roles. The movie was successfully remade in Tamil, Telugu, Kananda and Hindi languages. Leading actors like Kamal Haasan, Ajay Devgn and Venkatesh Daggubati reprised Mohanlal’s role in the remake versions.

Interestingly, Drishyam was also remade in Sinhalese (Sri Lanka) language as Dharmayudhayya. Jeethu Joseph’s screenplay has an universal appeal which could be placed in any milieu. This is the prime reason why the subject has got so many versions and has struck a chord with the audience every time it got remade. Truly a proud moment for Malayalam cinema.
