Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passes away at 74
Legendary playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, aged 74, has passed away. He breathed his last on September 25 in MGM Hospital in Chennai. He is survived by his wife Savitri and his two children – daughter Pallavi and son SP Charan.
SPB, as he is fondly called, was tested positive for Coronavirus last month. After being admitted in the hospital, his condition was critical in the initial few days and was on ECMO and ventilator support for over a month. He then showed improvement and was on the path of recovery. On September 13, he had also tested negative for Coronavirus.
However, by September 23, his condition further deteriorated and was deemed extremely critical. Several industry insiders like Kamal Haasan, Bharathiraja, Venkat Prabhu and many others visited him in the hospital. His passing away has come as a shock for many. Fans are pouring in their love for the legend through social medias.
In his career spanning five long decades, SPB had recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages. He has bagged numerous accolades including the Nation Award for six times, which he won for four different languages. He was also bestowed with Padma Shri Award in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011. SPB also holds a Guinness World Record for recording the highest number of songs.
