Malayalam Director Shafi Passes Away at 56, Leaves Behind a Legacy of Comedy Films

Renowned Malayalam director Shafi, born MH Rasheed, passed away today at the age of 56. He suffered a stroke on January 16 and had been admitted to a private hospital in Kochi, where he remained in critical condition until his passing.

Shafi made his directorial debut with the comedy film One Man Show in 2001 and went on to establish himself as a prominent figure in Malayalam cinema. Known for his knack for comedy, he directed 18 films during his illustrious career spanning two decades.

His collaboration with Malayalam superstar Dileep yielded several memorable films such as Kalyanaraman, Marykkundoru Kunjaadu, and Two Countries, which endeared him to audiences across Kerala. Shafi also worked with other notable actors including Mammootty, Jayaram, Jayasurya, Kunchacko Boban, and many more, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

Thommanum Makkalum, Mayavi, Makeup Man, Chocolate, etc were the other notable films directed by Shafi in his career.

Shafi hailed from a family deeply rooted in Malayalam cinema, with his elder brother Rafi being part of the celebrated writer-director duo Rafi Mecartin, and his uncle being the esteemed director Siddique.

His last directorial venture was Aanandam Paramanandam, released in 2022, showcasing his enduring passion for filmmaking and his commitment to entertaining audiences with his unique comedic flair.

The Malayalam film industry mourns the loss of Shafi, remembering him for his comedic genius and contributions to cinema that brought joy to countless fans.
