Malik opens with a 12-minute-long single shot sequence, reveals Mahesh Narayanan

‘Malik’ starring Fahadh Faasil and directed by Mahesh Narayanan of ‘Take Off’ fame was supposed to release in April but had to be postponed due to the lockdown. It is an eagerly awaited film that has been made on a big canvas with a budget of close to Rs 30 crores. The is based on a true incident that occurred few years back in Kerala.

Mahesh himself has scripted the film. The narrative is centered around a sensitive coastal area where there was a resistance against the constant threat of displacement of a minority community. The film will be capturing the evolution of the coastal area from the 60s to present age.

In a recent interview to The Cue, Mahesh revealed that he has attempted something new in ‘Malik’. Apparently, the first 12 minutes in the film is a single shot sequence. The shots are stitched together to make it seamless and he believes that the opening demanded such a treatment. Usually, single shots are used to capture action or chase sequences but in ‘Malik’, they have implemented it for introducing the various characters and their current state.

Sanu John Varughese, who was the DOP in ‘Take Off’ has been retained in ‘Malik’ as well. He is a veteran cinematographer who has worked many big names in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi languages. Besides directing and scripting, Mahesh Narayanan is also editing the film. Music director Sushin Shyam, production desinger Santhosh Raman and sound designers Vishnu Govind and Sree Sankar are also part of the technical team.

The cast includes Nimisha Sajayan, Dileesh Pothan, Vinay Forrt, Indrans, Sudhi Koppa, Chandhunath, yesteryear actress Jalaja, Maala Parvathy and many others. Anto Joseph Film Company is producing the film and Aan Mega Media will be releasing it in Kerala.
