Sangh parivar members to boycott Kamal’s Aami; instead gets trolled in social media

Veteran director Kamal has been in the news for sometime now. He was at the centre of criticism after Sangh Parivar members protested against him for the national anthem issue during the IFFK and his controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Later, Bollywood actress Vidya Balan walked out of his dream project Aami, which is a biopic on writer Kamala Das’ life.

Now, some Sangh Parivar members have called for boycotting the movie. But their call to stall the movie has paved way for severe trolling as meme creators have made good use of the situation to launch an attack on them.

During the 21st IFFK held in Thiruvananthapuram last year, a group of delegates did not stand during the National anthem, that has been made mandatory in theatres, forcing the police to arrest them. Kamal who is also the Chairman of Kerala State Chalachithra Academy questioned the police’s act to enter the theatres without informing the organisers. This triggered protests against Kamal and he was branded as an anti national by the Sangh Parivar members. They even staged protests in front of his house. BJP State general secretary AN Radhakrishnan asked Kamal to move to Pakistan if he cannot live by the rules here. The issue worsened with support flowing in from all corners for Kamal. FEFKA also demanded an apology from the BJP leader for his remarks.

Once the dust settled down, Kamal was all set to begin his dream project Aami when Vidya Balan who had earlier comitted for the movie walked out. She cited creative differences with the director as the reason but there were rumours that Kamal’s statements against Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the reason for opting out. The director recently finalized on Manju Warrier to play the character of Kamala Das in Aami. The movie will start rolling soon.

Meanwhile, the Sangh Parivar members call to boycott the movie was met with severe trolling in social medias. Netizens drew comparison with Aamir Khan’s PK, which was also boycotted in several parts of the country alleging that the movie was hurting religious sentiments of the Hindu community. However, the boycotting had no impact as PK went on to become the biggest ever blockbuster in the country.
