Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kaala satellite rights sold for Rs 75 crores?

It is no secret that Rajinikanth commands a massive fan following, not just in Tamil Nadu but in the whole of India. His movies have always been known for doing tremendous business. As per latest reports, the satellite rights of his upcoming movie Kaala has been sold for a whopping price. Reportedly, market leader Star TV has acquired the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi rights of the movie for Rs 75 crores. This is said to be second highest for a South Indian movie.

Earlier, Rajinikanth’s own 2.O had set a new record among Indian movies for the highest satellite rights. Broadcast rights for the Shankar directorial was sold for a staggering Rs 110 crores to Zee TV. The presence of another superstar in Akshay Kumar and also the fact that it was the sequel of Enthiran (Robot in Hindi) helped 2.0 bag such a big deal. But Kaala’s market entirely lies on Rajinikanth’s shoulders.

Kaala does not have a well known director, nor does it have a top heroine or other big names in the cast. Rajinikanth’s last outing Kabali, which was also with the same director Pa Ranjith, did not yield the expected results at the box office. Inspite of all that, the satellite rights of Kaala going for such a huge amount speaks volumes on the superstar’s popularity.

Kaala is basically a commercial gangster flick based in the Mumbai underworld. It is about a guy from Tirunelveli, who runs away in his childhood to Mumbai to become a powerful don living in the slums. Rajinikanth plays this character, Kaala, who heads the Tamil community in the slums of Dharavi.

Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi is playing the female lead, but she is not paired opposite Rajinikanth. Multiple national award winner Nana Patekar plays the antagonist. Rajinikanth’s son-in-law and actor Dhanush is producing Kaala under his banner Wunderbar Films Pvt Ltd. The movie is slated for a grand summer release on April 27.
