Vetrimaaran picks his recent favorite Malayalam films

Vetrimaaran is easily one of the most exciting filmmakers we have in the country today. His films transcend boundaries and are lapped up by non-Tamilians as well. Despite being just five-films old, he commands a huge fan following among film buffs across the nation.

Recently, The Hindu had conducted a Instagram live series in which Vetrimaaran spoke in length about his favorite Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, his mentor Balu Mahendra and various other interesting topics related to cinema and filmmaking. When asked about the new wave of Malayalam cinema, the director named some of his recent favorites.

Vetrimaaran is quoted saying, “They are coming up with new interesting ideas. Quite a few films have impressed me like ‘Sudani from Nigeria’, ‘Ee.Ma.Yau’, ‘Jallikattu’, ‘Prathi Poovankozhi’, ‘Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25’ and ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ The directors are trying to explore new territories, and are doing so in mainstream cinema in a very convincing way.”
