Wamiqa Gabbi – The Punjabi wonder in Godha

So, director Basil Joseph’s Godha was finally released yesterday. The movie has opened to positive response from all corners. Critics have given a thumbs up to this entertainer starring Tovino Thomas, Wamiqa Gabbi and Renji Panicker in the lead roles.

Godha is a story about a wrestling enthusiast Aditi Singh and her arrival to a village that has a rich history in Gatta Gusthi, a native form of wrestling. Punjabi actress Wamiqa Gabbi has played the central character of Aditi Singh in the movie.

Aditi Singh is a properly fleshed out strong female character, a kind of role that one rarely comes across in mainstream cinema these days. Heard that Basil Joseph and his team scouted for long before they found Wamiqa and what a choice that has proven to be. Her expressive eyes, charm and the rage that she exudes is what makes her perfect for the role of Aditi Singh.

Godha sends out a strong statement on women’s empowerment. There is this terrifically enacted scene featuring Aditi and Das, where she fights tears and informs him about how her brother is forcing her to get married. Aditi asks, “how big can a girl dream?“. Das has no answer to that but the movie shows that ‘sky is the limit’ if girls break the shackles. She is a victim of the patriarchal society, but chooses not to be tied down and runs away. Just loved the way how Basil and writer Rakesh Mandoti smartly staged the climax with no word about her relationship with Das.

Aditi wants to wrestle, she wants to live on her own, she wants to prove what girls are capable of. Wamiqa breathes life into what was written on paper and she deserves all the appreciation that is coming her way. Looking forward to more from this wonderful actress.
