Mamangam: A well-made period film with top performances!
Amidst much hype, the Mammootty starrer ‘Mamangam’ got released today in 389 screens across Kerala. As the makers clearly explain in the beginning, the film is set against the backdrop of the Mamangam festival, which is a fair was held every 12 years during the 17th and 18th centuries in Thirunavaya on the banks of Bharathapuzha. It is a huge fair where warriors and trade from across the country would come together to showcase their skills at combat.
This film is centered around the Chandroth family who try to kill the Zamorin ruler during the Mamangam festival. Basically, the plot is set around the life of these warriors who plot to defeat the Zamorins. The makers have been successful in presenting such a big scale film in all its glory. Rich production values is evident as we get to see massive sets and action pieces. Apart from all that, the film also has a strong emotional core and that has come out really well.
Performance wise, Mammootty is at his sublime best. His female avatar and a particular dance sequence in the first half came out of nowhere as a pleasant surprise. The efforts the veteran has put in this film is there to be seen in the action sequences. Unni Mukundan is another stand out performer. With his well built physique, the actor is very convincing as a warrior and his fiery performance in the action scenes is a treat to watch. Similarly, master Achuthan, who probably has the most important role in the film has done what was expected of him. His skills in kalaripayattu makes one go awestruck.
Technically, ‘Mamangam’ is a top-notch work with quality visuals that effectively bring out the grandeur. The thumping background score also helps in increasing the adrenaline rush during the mass moments.
Overall, ‘Mamangam’ is a highly impressive film that does manage to live up to the expectations. It is definitely one of those films that deserved to be enjoyed in a quality theatrical ambiance.
