Saithan Review

Music director turned promising actor Vijay Antony is back with a new movie, this time a psychological thriller. Saithan is about the story of a man who is in search of a mysterious woman named Jayalakshmi.

Vijay Antony plays the lead role of a software professional named Dinesh who travels to his past birth to find out more about the unknown mysteries in his life. The plot revolves around his struggles between his past life and reality. Arundhati Nair plays his wife in the movie.

Directed by Pradeep Krishnamoorthy is a praiseworthy effort. The first half is cleverly paced with a lot of intriguing scenes to raise the curiosity levels of the audience. The director somewhat succeeds in making an edge of a seat thriller, apart from the flat cinematic climax. The execution could have clearly been better for the complex yet intriguing script demanded it.

Coming to the performances, Vijay Nair has done a fine job. He keeps improving with every movie and will only get better. Arundathi Nair who played the female lead beauty looks convincing as the character with two different avatars. Other supporting actors like veterans YG Mahendra and Chaaru Haasan have also given a good performance.

Vijay Antony’s background music is another major highlight of the movie. It sets up the mood for an intriguing thriller. All the songs were forced and were clearly a hindrance at many points.

Vijay Antony should be appreciated for trying out something new and unique in every movie of his. He does not want to do the typical masala entertainers and that is a great choice by the actor, for there is a high expectation level among the Kollywood audience for his movies. He has also produced this movie under his banner Vijay Antony Film Corporation.

Saithan discusses a unique and great theme that demanded a better execution. The movie would have been more appealing for the general audience if it had a better second half and climax.
