Thudakkam Review: Vismaya Mohanlal Makes a Confident Debut in a Crowd-Pleasing Commercial Entertainer

Launching a star kid in Malayalam cinema is never easy. Audiences don’t just watch the performance-they compare, scrutinize, and judge every expression. Thudakkam embraces that challenge head-on and emerges as a satisfying commercial entertainer, powered by confident performances, solid execution, and well-crafted theatrical moments.

Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, Thudakkam doesn’t reinvent the action-thriller formula. The story follows a familiar path, and many of its twists are easy to predict. Yet, what makes the film work is the way Jude packages this straightforward narrative with emotion, action, and crowd-pleasing commercial elements. He understands exactly where to slow down, where to inject emotion, and where to unleash an applause-worthy moment.

The biggest talking point, undoubtedly, is Vismaya Mohanlal’s debut. She delivers a surprisingly assured performance, never looking overwhelmed by the pressure of carrying a major commercial film. Her emotional scenes feel sincere, while the action sequences reveal remarkable confidence for a newcomer. Rather than relying on her family name, Vismaya lets her performance do the talking. There are subtle glimpses of Mohanlal’s screen presence in a few expressions, but she wisely avoids imitation and builds her own identity.

Another pleasant surprise is Aashish Antony, who leaves a strong impression despite limited dialogue. His commanding screen presence and restrained performance make him a convincing antagonist. Together, Vismaya and Aashish provide Thudakkam with two promising newcomers who never feel like first-time actors.

The supporting cast, including Saikumar, Bobby Kurian, and others, adds weight to the narrative, while Mohanlal’s cameo delivers exactly what fans expect—a brief yet effective moment that earns genuine applause without overshadowing the main story.

Technically, the film is polished. Jakes Bejoy’s background score is one of its biggest strengths, elevating several key sequences, particularly during the action blocks. Jomon T. John, Akhil George and Sudeep Elamon’s cinematography captures the film with style, and Chaman Chacko’s editing keeps the narrative moving at a steady pace. The climax action sequence, in particular, stands out thanks to its choreography, execution, and emotional payoff.

That said, Thudakkam isn’t without flaws. The screenplay follows a familiar commercial template, and seasoned viewers may find several developments predictable. Not every emotional beat lands with equal impact, and the film occasionally plays it safe instead of taking narrative risks. Those looking for a groundbreaking story may come away slightly disappointed.

Still, commercial cinema isn’t always about originality—it’s about presentation. On that front, Jude Anthany Joseph succeeds. He transforms a conventional story into an engaging theatrical experience through effective storytelling, strong performances, and well-timed emotional and action moments.

Overall, Thudakkam is a well-executed family action thriller that delivers exactly what it promises. It may not break new ground, but it succeeds as an entertaining big-screen experience while giving Vismaya Mohanlal an impressive and confident debut. If this is her beginning, it’s certainly one to be proud of.
