Meghalaya BJP leader says beef will not be banned but will be made cheaper

Recently, the BJP led government at the Centre virtually launched a ban on beef by enforcing a nationwide restriction on the sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter. The government is facing severe criticism for it’s new directive as people especially in the Southern and Northeastern states see this is an undemocratic rule.

Meanwhile, a leader from Meghalaya has promised that they will not ban beef if voted to power. Bernard Marak, a BJP leader from the Northeastern state has not only ruled out beef ban in the state but has also promised reduction of its price for the poor if the BJP comes to power in the 2018 assembly elections.

Bernard Mark is quoted saying, “Consumption of beef is a routine thing among Garo people, most of who are Christians. But the prices are very high as there is no regularisation. If elected, our party will regularise sale, which will bring prices down.”

He added, “Slaughter houses will be set up, meat will be checked to ensure it is fit for consumption, rates will be regulated. The people of the state need not panic or get influenced by other political parties on the issue of beef ban,” he said.

Bernard Marak also accused the present Congress government of failing to regulate the price of beef which has led to harassment of the public. Meghalaya is a predominately Christian state where beef is a commonly consumed meat among the local people.
