Gangubai Kathiawadi: Alia Bhatt looks majestic in this Sanjay Leela Bhansali film!

The teaser of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ has just been released online. Alia Bhatt plays the titular role in the film and is also has a special appearance by Ajay Devgn. The film is scheduled to hit screens on 30 July, 2021. Bhansali and Dr Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios are jointly producing it.

The film is based on the life of Gangubai Kathiawadi, one of the most famous madams from brothels in Mumbai’s infamous red light area, Kamathipura. As per reports, she came to Mumbai from Gujarat with her partner, Ramnik Lal, who betrayed and sold her off. She was pushed into prostitution and went on to foster ties with many underworld dons and even got a hold over certain portions in Mumbai. She later became the madam of a brothel and is said to have championed the rights of sex workers. She worked for the upliftment of women and orphans in the area of Kamathipura.

The film was originally announced as ‘Heera Mandi’ with Priyanka Chopra as the lead character, but later she was replaced by Alia Bhatt. While Alia plays Gangubai’s role, the film also has Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz and Seema Pahwa in prominent roles.
