I was disappointed with Kasaba as certain dialogues said to a woman were derogatory and saddening: Parvathy

Parvathy is known to be one of the most outspoken female actors in the Malayalam film industry. The actor has often raised her voice against various issues, in fact she was the among to first to talk about the existence of casting couch in the industry. Parvathy has made yet another bold statement, this time about the controversial Mammootty starrer Kasaba.

Parvathy recently attended an interactive session held by the Women In Cinema Collective (WCC) in the ongoing IFFK. The actress was talking about how misogyny has been prevalent in Malayalam cinema and why it should to be done away at the earliest.

Parvathy said, “Unfortunately, I happened to watch a called Kasaba recently and with all due respect to all the technicians who worked in the film, I was definitely disappointed to watch an actor par excellence, whom I look up to, say dialogues to a woman that were not just derogatory but most saddening. Now many would say cinema reflects society but the line to draw is whether to glorify it or not. When a hero says such dialogues, it’s obviously glorified.”

Kasaba was at the eye of a storm when it got released last year. Mammootty along with the movie’s makers were issued notice by the Women’s Commission for some scenes and dialogues that were alleged as portraying women in a poor light. The movie which marked the directorial debut of Nithin Renji Panicker was severely panned by the critics for its profanity and vulgarity.

Parvathy’s criticism of the movie and its misogyny is now the hot topic of discussion in social media forums.
