Midhun Manuel Thomas confirms that Kottayam Kunjachan is happening!
Last year, during the success celebration event of ‘Aadu 2’, Vijay Babu of Friday Film House announced the sequel to Mammootty’s cult hit film ‘Kottayam Kunjachan’. Midhun Manuel Thomas of ‘Aadu’ fame was signed as the director. However, controversy soon struck as the original makers of ‘Kottayam Kunjachan’ made it clear that they had not sold the sequel rights for anyone and that the announcement was made without informing them.
Ever since that, there has been no updates about the project. After nearly a year, director Midhun Manuel Thomas revealed that the movie has still not been dropped. In the recently held awards ceremony of popular Facebook group Cinema Paradiso Club (CPC), Midhun, while interacting with the group members, informed that the project is on and they are currently working on the script.
‘Kottayam Kunjachan’, released back in 1990, was directed by TS Suresh Babu. Mammootty as Kunjachan, a Kottayam-based ruffian, gave one his finest performances in a comedy role. His styling, the Kottayam dialect and the foul-mouthed dialogues went on to become hugely popular. Kunjachan enjoys an iconic status and is still regarded as one of his most loved characters of all-time.
Needless to say, it will be a tough task for Midhun Maneul Thomas and team to bring back the old Kunjachan on screen. Let’s hope he succeeds in it.
