Deleted comedy scene from Oppam

Oppam starring Mohanlal marked the rejoining of one of the favourite actor – director combos in Malayalam cinema. Priyadarshan made a terrific comeback through this movie after a series of duds.

For his comeback, Priyadarshan decided to take up a crime thriller, a genre which the master director has not tried before. Mohanlal played a blind man who was on the run to protect a girl from a serial killer, played by Samuthirakani.

Even in such a serious dark theme, Oppam had some fine moments of humour thanks to the ever dependable veteran Maamukoya. He played a security guard who mixes up everyone’s names to some Muslim name.

Priyadarshan in a recent interview said that, he had to cut some humorous scenes featuring Maamukoya owing to the run time constraints that is very essential in a crime thriller.

Maamukoya had a hilarious scene where he reads the news paper loud, ” That Sainaba (Saritha) has ruined our Chief Minister Ummer Kutty’s (Oomen Chandy) political life”. Mohanlal throws away the paper after hearing this news.

Oppam has recently become the second highest grosser in Malayalam cinema beating the record set by Drishyam in 2013.
