“I was inspired by the story of Carbon”, says multiple National award winner Vishal Bhardwaj
Fahadh Faasil’s upcoming movie Carbon is a very interesting film in the making. It is cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Venu’s third directorial venture after the widely acclaimed Daya (1998) and Munnariyippu (2013). He has assembled a stellar technical crew for Carbon, which he has also scripted.
KU Mohanan is handling the cinematography and Venu’s wife Beena Paul, a national award winner, is editing the film. Another major highlight of the film is the songs composed by acclaimed Hindi filmmaker/composer Vishal Bhardwaj. He has composed three songs for the movie and is getting response from the listeners after the audio was launched earlier this week in grand style in Kochi.
Carbon is Vishal Bhardwaj’s second Malayalam after the 1998 film Daya, which was also directed by Venu. In a recent interview to DC, he opened up more about the challenges while composing for a Malayalam movie and more.
He is quoted saying, “Working with Malayalam lyrics is a challenging exercise. It is very challenging, at the same time is also very exciting. You come to know the meaning of the song from the lyricist or the director, but it still remains a phonetic sound for me. It is a very interesting exercise. When the phonetics change, the music phrasing changes, the metre of the words changes and so to me, my songs sound different. The whole process is very exciting.”
About his rapport with director Venu, he said, “Creative problems arise when people are aesthetically different. But aesthetically we are on the same page. Venu is an old friend and moreover, we like the same kind of cinema. Therefore, the journey was easy. I was here for three days and within that time I made three songs. I was also very inspired by the story of Carbon.”
Vishal Bhardwaj is one of most celebrated director-composers in Indian cinema. He is a recipient of seven national awards in four different categories. His Willaim Shakespeare adaptation trilogy- Omkara, Maqbool and Haider has won several national and international awards. His presence along with names like KU Mohanan, Venu, Beena Paul, and two fine actors in Fahadh Faasil and Mamta Mohandas has helped Carbon garner a huge pre-release buzz.
Carbon’s supporting cast has a balance of veteran and younger generation of talented actors. It includes Nedumudi Venu, Vijayaraghavan, Ashokan, Lena, Dileesh Pothan, Soubin Shahir, Sharafudheen, Manikandan Achari, Kochu Preman and Guppy fame Master Chetan Lal among others.
Carbon is being produced jointly by Sibi Thottapuram and Navis Xaviour. An official announcement regarding the release date is expected to be made very soon.
