Kamal Haasan comes out in support of Vijay’s Mersal
Vijay’s latest release Mersal is the latest talk of the town after BJP called for boycotting the movie alleging that the makers have mocked their schemes. After strong political pressure in Tamil Nadu by the BJP leaders the makers of Mersal have agreed to remove the much talked about GST scenes.
However, the general public in TN have strongly opposed this and want the scenes to be retained in the movie.
All of a sudden, Mersal has become hugely popular across the country thanks to the coverage the national medias have been giving to this issue during their prime time shows. Many have come out in support of Vijay and Mersal team while also criticising the BJP for questioning one’s right to expression. There are even calls to re-censor the movie due to its critical statements about the government’s policies like Digital India and GST pricing.
Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan, a staunch critic of the BJP government, has extended his support to Mersal. In his official Twitter handle, he has written,
“Mersal was certified. Dont re-censor it . Counter criticism with logical response. Dont silence critics. India will shine when it speaks.”
Mersal, scripted jointly by Atlee, KV Vijayendra Prasad and Ramana Girivasan, has a regular revenge story but comes with a very relevant social message about the importance of a proper health sector. The protagonist in the film fights for free medical facilities to all, regardless of their financial background.
In a particular scene in the film, the character played by Vijay compares the standards of health sector in India and Singapore. He says that despite charging only 7% GST, people there get free medical treatment but in India where people are charged 28% GST, we don’t get any free treatment. There is another scene where Vadivelu mocks the digital India scheme and how people had to stand in long queues during the demonetisation period. Apparently, these scenes have not gone well with the BJP.
Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook are buzzing with discussions related to the Mersal issue. The hashtag Mersal vs Modi is trending virally in Twitter and many have raised their voice in this issue.
Meanwhile, Mersal continues to set the cash registers ringing like never before. The movie has already broken several collection records in both the domestic and overseas market. In Tamil Nadu the movie is reported to have done a business of around 43 crores from the first two days itself. It is expected to cross the 100 crore mark worldwide within a couple of days.
