Mersal crosses 225 crore mark worldwide; Beats Kabali to become the industrial hit of Kollywood!
Vijay’s Mersal continues its stellar run at the box office worldwide. The movie has zoomed past the Rs 225 crore mark from earnings across the globe. It is now the highest grossing Tamil film ever beating the records held by superstar Rajinikanth’s Enthiran and Kabali.
Although Enthiran had grossed over Rs 250 crores at the box office, the film was released in three languages unlike Mersal which has released in just one language so far. The Telugu version of Mersal, which has been titled Adirindhi, is slated for release this Friday (November 9). Both the Tamil and Telugu versions were supposed to release simultaneously but the latter got pushed due to some technical reasons.
Mersal directed by Atlee is a commercial mass entertainer in which Vijay plays a triple role as a village head, a doctor and a magician. It is a a regular revenge story that also lets out a very relevant social message about the medical facilities in our country.
Mersal has done a business of Rs 150 crores from the Indian box office alone. The Vijay starrer is now placed sixth at the list of highest grossing South Indian films. The Baahubali films top the list followed by Rajinikanth’s Enthiran, Kabali and Vikram’s I.
With the Telugu version’s release, Mersal is expected to comfortably go past Vikram’s I. This movie gives Vijay the chance to have his best ever box office run in Telugu states. The blockbuster success of Mersal and all the curiosity on it that arose after the BJP’s political pressure are big positives for the movie.
Vijay enjoys good popularity in the twin Telugu states and the presence of actors like Sathyaraj, Nithya Menen, Samantha and Kajal Agarwal will surely grab the attention of the Telugu audience. Also, Baahubali’s writer Vijendra Prasad is associated with this Vijay film and hence it is expected to have a good opening.
