Raghava Lawrence to direct Akshay Kumar and Madhavan in Kanchana remake
We had earlier reported about Akshay Kumar starring in the remake of blockbuster Tamil film ‘Kanchana’ aka ‘Muni 2’. Raghava Lawrence, who directed and starred in the original, will be helming the remake version as well. The movie has reportedly been titled as ‘Lakshmi’. Writer-director Farhad Samji is currently working on the script to make it suitable for the sensibilities of the Hindi audience.
The ‘Muni’ aka ‘Kanchana’ franchise enjoys great popularity among the Tamil audience. Made on a horror comedy template, all the films – Muni, Kanchana (Muni 2), Kanchana 2 Ganga (Muni 3) – have been successful at the box office. Fourth instalment in the series, ‘Kanchana 3’, hit screens last Friday and has taken a big opening at the box office.
Of all the four films in the franchise, ‘Kanchana’ had the best content. The movie revolves around the series protagonist Raghava and a transgender ghost. The novel element of a transgender being shown in good light was the movie’s USP. Sarath Kumar’s stellar performance as the transgender was also praised. In the Hindi version, Akshay Kumar will be reprising the role played by Lawrence. Speculations are rife about Madhavan or Sanjay Dutt doing the role played by Sarath Kumar, but the makers are yet to confirm the same. Kiara Adhvani has been signed as the female lead.
