The sensational Premam turns 2!

One of the biggest blockbusters in recent times, Premam is turning 2 today. The Nivin Pauly starrer was released exactly this day, May 29, in 2015. The movie was a huge sensation that went on to wreak havoc in the box office.

Premam, directed by Alphonse Puthren is a coming of age love story that showcased the three stages of the protagonist character George David, played by Nivin Pauly. Newcomers Anupama Parameswaran, Sai Pallavi and Madonna Sebastian played the three female leads who go past George’s life in each stage.

Premam was released amid minimal hype. Prior to the release, the movie neither had a teaser nor a trailer. Only the songs ‘Aluva Puzha’ and ‘Pathivaayi Njan’ were released and it gave the impression that the movie was just another teenage love story.

The makers cleverly kept the bearded look of Nivin Pauly under the wraps and that proved to be a masterstroke. After the first show itself, overwhelming reports started flowing in. It soon became the talk of the town and the youth celebrated the movie like never before.

Everything about the movie was much raved about; be it the direction, music, performances and even the costumes. Sai Pallavi’s character Malar won the hearts of scores of Malayali youngsters. The movie gave a big break to the Aluva gang of Krishna Shankar, Shabareesh Varma, Sharafudheen and Siju Wilson.

Rajesh Murugesan’s soulful compositions struck a chord with the audience and Anend C Chandran’s magical frames elevated the movie to another level. As ace filmmaker Priyadarshan said, Premam is one of the most technically rich films in recent years.

Premam was a massive blockbuster not only in Kerala. The movie had a record 250 days theatrical run in Chennai. Tamilians were swept by Nivin Pauly’s charm and he became hugely popular in the neighbouring state. After Bangalore Days, it was Premam that attracted the non-Malayali audience to watch our movies.

As Premam celebrates two years today, it’s director Alphonse Puthren is prepping to start shooting for his next Tamil movie. Nivin Pauly is now a big star and his first straight Tamil movie Richie is gearing up for release. The lead ladies; Anupama Parameswaran, Sai Pallavi and Madonna Sebastian are all now busy with multiple projects in the South.

So, Premam was not just another movie, it was the much needed opening for a bunch of talented youngsters who were passionate about cinema. Any write-up about Premam will only be incomplete without a special mention about Anwar Rasheed, the man who came forward to invest the money trusting the youngsters. Wish he ropes in the Premam team to recreate the magic!
