Dangal crosses the 100-crore mark
Aamir Khan’s latest release Dangal which hit the screens on December 23rd has been getting extremely positive reviews and has already, been regarded as one of the best Bollywood movies in recent years.
The movie, directed by Nitesh Tiwari also features Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar and Sakshi Tanwar playing the major characters. It has now crossed the coveted Rs 100-crore mark in its first weekend itself.
Dangal did a massive business of Rs 42.35 crore from Sunday alone to take the first weekend total to a whopping figure of Rs 106.95 crore. This is now the biggest opening opening weekend ever for an Aamir Khan movie. The numbers also include the box office returns from the Tamil and Telugu versions of the movie.
On Saturday, the movie had a collection of Rs 34.82 crores. It has had a massive leap of 21.63 percent from Saturday to Sunday. On the initial day, Friday which was a working day, the collections amounted to Rs 29.78 crores including 55 lakhs from the Tamil and Telugu versions.
The movie is showing remarkable growth collection wise, thanks to the unanimously positive word of mouth and the Christmas weekend.
Dangal is now Aamir’s fifth film to enter the Rs 100 crore club after Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 and PK. It is movie based on the real life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained his two daughters – Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari – in the sport.
The film shows the journey of the father and his daughters from their rigorous training right from their childhood to finally fulfilling their biggest dream, a medal for the country.
Apart from just another sports drama, Dangal discusses a very relevant topic about the importance of giving equal respect and opportunities to girls also. It sends out a very clear message that girls are no lesser than boys, making a strong statement about female empowerment.
Dangal is expected to continue this glorious run in the coming days also as there are no other releases from Bollywood for this week also.
