Leonardo Di Caprio shares a timely note about the acute water crisis in Tamil Nadu
The state of Tamil Nadu is witnessing one of its driest seasons in history. The entire state, including its capital Chennai, is grappling with severe water shortage. Most residents are dependent on tankers to meet their day to day needs. After nearly 170 days of no rainfall, the state had intermittent showers in the past week but only continuous pouring will ensure some respite from this misery.
Meanwhile, Hollywood actor Leonardo Di Caprio, who is one of the most loudest voices, in the world with regard to global warming, has shared the news about water shortage in Chennai through his Instagram handle. Sharing a photo of residents drawing from a nearly empty well, Di Caprio has written,
“Only rain can save Chennai from this situation.” A well completely empty, and a city without water. The southern Indian city of Chennai is in crisis, after the four main water reservoirs ran completely dry. The acute water shortage has forced the city to scramble for urgent solutions and residents have to stand in line for hours to get water from government tanks. As the water levels depleted, hotels and restaurants started to shut down temporarily, and the air con was turned off in the city’s metro. Officials in the city continue to try and find alternative sources of water – but the community continue to pray for rain.
