Mollywood’s young stars eyeing big in Tamil cinema
Malayalis have always been welcoming of Tamil movies but the same cannot be said about the Tamil audience. This trend is changing positively as Malayalam movies, especially those with younger crop of actors, are getting acceptance among the Tamilians.
Actors like Nivin Pauly and Dulquer Salmaan have fair share of popularity in Tamil Nadu courtesy the success of films like Bangalore Days, Premam, Charlie etc. Apart from these two actors, Fahadh Faasil and Tovino Thomas have also signed for Tamil films. Dulquer and Nivin lead the pack with three films each followed by Fahadh with two.
Nivin Pauly made his Tamil debut by starring in Alphonse Puthren’s bilingual movie Neram. However, it was the sensational success of Premam that won him scores of fans in the neighbouring state. His first staright Tamil film Richie is expected to hit screens this month. He has also committed for two other Tamil movies; both with debutant filmmakers – Prabhu Radhakrishnan and Surya Balakaumran.
Like Nivin, Dulquer also made his Tamil debut with a bilingual- Vaayai Moodi Pesavum. His performance in Mani Ratnam’s OK Kanmani was highly appreciated and made him popular among the Tamil audience. His next release is Solo, a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual directed by Bejoy Nambiar. He has also signed for two other Tamil films, again with newcomers – Desingh Periyasamy and Ra Karthik.
Fahadh Faasil, arguably the most talented young actor in the south, has been roped in for two Tamil movies this year. He is playing the antagonist’s role in Thani Oruvan director Mohan Raja’s next which stars Sivakarthikeyan in the lead. The movie titled as Velaikaaran also stars Nayanthara, Sneha and Prakash Raj in major roles. It is an anthology of five movies which also has Vijay Sethupathy, Samantha and Nadia Moidu in the lead roles.
Tovino Thomas is gradually raising to the big league, riding on the back of a string of successful films. He is making his Tamil debut with a bilingual titled as Abi & Anu. Pia Bajpai is playing the female lead in this romantic entertainer directed by BR Vijayalakshmi, Asia’s first woman cinematographer. Abi & Anu is Tovino’s first attempt in playing a full length romantic character and that itself is very exciting. The movie is scheduled to release on September 22.
Besides the above mentioned stars, Prithviraj and Indrajith have also committed for projects in Tamil cinema. Prithviraj is playing one of the leads in Gautham Menon’s multilingual rumored to be titled as Ondraga. His brother Indrajith is part of D16 fame Karthik Naren’s next movie titled as Naragasooran.
