Tamil Cinema Icon and DMDK Founder Vijayakanth Passes Away at 71 in Chennai
The passing of the iconic actor-politician and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder, Vijayakanth, has left a deep void in the hearts of many. He breathed his last in Chennai at the age of 71, as confirmed by officials from Miot Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for pneumonia.
Despite the valiant efforts of the medical team and being on ventilatory support, Captain Vijaykanth succumbed to his illness on the morning of December 28, 2023, marking the end of an era.
Affectionately hailed as “Captain” owing to his compelling depictions of military characters, Vijayakanth traversed beyond the boundaries of cinema, evolving into a versatile actor. With an impressive repertoire of 154 movies, he showcased his remarkable talent before stepping into the realm of politics.
His contribution to Tamil cinema began in 1979 with a villainous role in ‘Inikkum Ilamai.’ Over the years, he captured the hearts of audiences with notable films such as ‘Captain Prabhakaran,’ ‘Sivappu Malli,’ ‘Amman Kovil Kizhakale,’ and many more, earning widespread popularity and adulation.
In 2005, Vijayakanth took a significant step in the political arena by founding the DMDK. His vision aimed to offer an alternative political platform in Tamil Nadu, challenging the dominance of established Dravidian parties like the DMK and AIADMK.
Vijayakanth’s legacy remains etched in the annals of Tamil cinema and politics, leaving behind a profound impact that resonates with generations. His multifaceted journey—from a revered actor to a political luminary—will continue to inspire and influence Tamil Nadu’s socio-cultural landscape for years to come.
