Top 10 super hits in Indian Cinema for the year 2016
For the past years we can see the growth in Indian cinema commercially widening it’s reaches in the worldwide box office. In an industry like Bollywood, a movie reaching the 100 crore mark is no more a big news because of the massive budgets involved, the huge amounts spent for promotional purposes and the market for Bollywood movies worldwide. But of late, South Indian movies are also slowly entering the race and giving stiff competition for Hindi movies. Here we list down the top 10 highest grossers in Indian cinema for the year 2016.
1) Sultan
Topping the list is Salman Khan’s Sultan, a sports drama directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. The movie once again proved Salman Khan’s authority in the Indian box office. Last year the actor produced a similar success through Bhajrangi Bhaijaan. Sultan collected around 588 crores worldwide. The box office returns from India alone account to around 300 crores (net).
2) Kabali
Superstar Rajinikanth’s gangster flick Kabali is the second in the list of the highest grossers. The movie was directed by three film old Ranjith. Kabali was expected to be a complete mass entertainer on the lines of Bhaasha and Padayappa, but it was more of an emotional drama. The humongous pre-release hype of the movie was and the massive promotions helped the movie collect big at the box office. Kabali grossed around 350 crores worldwide.
3) Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Marred by controversies prior to release, ADHM directed by Karan Johar finally found success at the box office. This multi starrer had Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan in the lead roles. This movie was another typical Karan Johar story about love, lust and friendship. Like other KJo movies, ADHM was also a great success at the overseas market and subsequently the movie ended up with collections of around 236 crores worldwide.
4) Airlift
When we look at commercial successes, this year ultimately belonged to Akshay Kumar. Three of his movies are among the top 10 highest grossers. Airlift directed by Raja Krishna Menon, was a movie inspired from real life events that happened during the Kuwait war. The movie did a business of around 230 crores worldwide. Airlift collected around 130 crores (net) from the Indian box office alone.
5) Rustom
Another Akshay Kumar starrer, Rustom was also inspired from real life events. He played the titled character in this movie which is a thrilling courtroom drama. The movie directed by Tinu Suresh Desai collected around 218 crores worldwide, while the collections from Indian box office alone amount to 127 cores (net).
6) MS Dhoni : The Untold Story
This biography about the life of Indian cricket’s most successful capitan was a stellar success at the box office. Sushant Singh Rajput played Mahendra Singh Dhoni in this movie directed by ace filmmaker Neeraj Pandey. Collections form Indian box office amount to around 133 crores (net) while the worldwide box office returns amount to 216 crores.
7) House full 3
Housefull 3 was the third installment in the popular Houseful franchise. This comedy entertainer starred Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Ritiesh Deshumkh, Lisa Haydon, Jacqueline Fernandez and Nargis Fakhri in the lead roles. Housefull 3 collections stand at 190 crores worldwide with 107 cores (net) from the Indian box office alone.
8) Fan
Fan was Shah Rukh Khan’s only release this year after last year’s disastrous Dilwale. Though critically appreciated, Fan could not reap the expected box office returns from the Indian box office. But SRK’s global fan base ensured a fair collection from the overseas market. Form India the movie could collect only 85 crores (net) while the worldwide collections amounted to 180 crores.
9) Theri
Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Theri directed by Atlee was a complete package of commercial mass entertainer. Vijay’s star power did wonders for the movie even with an ordinary plot and execution. Theri is South India’s second highest grosser next only to superstar Rajinikanth’s Kabali. The movie collected around 175 crores worldwide.
10) Pulimurugan
The surprise but deserving entry to the list is Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan. This must be the first time ever in Indian cinema that a Malayalam movie is among the top 10 highest grossers. Pulimurugan directed by Vysakh smashed every single box office record in Mollywood starting with the first day record. It went on to become the first ever Malayalam movie to enter the elite 100 crore club breaking several pre-existing records and creating new ones.
Pulimurugan is nearing its successful 100th day run in theatres. The movie has already done a business of over 150 crores with worldwide collections alone amounting to nearly 140 crores.
Other movies the top 15 include Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay, Mohanlal-Jr NTR’s Janatha Garage, Tiger Shroff’s Bhaagi and Sonam Kapoor”s Neerja.
