Mammootty Movies 2016 : Hit Flop Overview
Megastar Mammootty had 4 releases this year. Like the previous year, 2016 also was a mixed year. Eventhough the actor has been having a mixed past few years, he was part of some content rich movies like Pathemari (2015), Varsham (2014) and Munnariyippu (2014).
However, this year did not witness any such movies from the actor. Let’s take a look at how all his releases fared this year.
Puthiya Niyamam was Mammootty’s first release this year. Nayanthara played Mammootty’s pair once again after the blockbuster movie Bhaskar the Rascal.
Upon release, Puthiya Niyamam was met with mixed response by the common audience and the critics. Critics pointed out the predictable climax and mediocre direction as the major drawbacks of the movie. It was an average affair at the box office. With the satellite and other rights, Puthiya Niyamam gained some profits for the producer.
Kasaba was a much expected movie prior to the release itself. Mammootty played the uber cool cop Rajan Zachariah with grey shades in the movie. Kasaba created a new record in the Mollywood box office for the opening day collections, which was later bettered by Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan.
Kasaba was a commercial entertainer, but the use of profanities and misogynistic comments from a superstar like Mammootty sparked severe criticism from the woman community. Even though the collections went down after the huge initial response, satellite and other rights helped the movie end up with a Super Hit status.
Mammootty’s next release, White did not have any expectations before the release may be because of the lack of proper promotions or the absence of other prominent supporting actors. White had Bollywood beauty Huma Quershi playing the female lead. Shot majorly in UK, White only had a very few characters apart from the lead cast. The movie was a colossal disaster at the box office. It is one of the most poorly made movies of 2016.
Thoppil Joppan was released alongside Mohanlal’s biggie Pulimurugan. Even amidst the Pulimurugan wave, Thoppil Joppan managed to have a good initial opening. But the poor script and lack of freshness in the presentation, backfired for the movie. According to trade reports, the movie caused a loss of around 2 crores for the producer.
Mammootty is having a slew of exciting projects lined up for next year like The Great Father, Peranbu, Puthan Panam etc. Let’s hope that the actor will continue to amaze us with his stunning performances.
