Legendary director K Balachander about the difference between Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan’s acting
Mohanlal and his close friend director Priyadarshan have together made many blockbusters. They recently joined together to make Oppam, a crime thriller. The movie has crossed the 50 crore mark and is still running successfully in theatres.
Mohanlal-Priyadarshan combo is one of the most legendary actor director combinations in Malayalam cinema history. Priyadarshan has directed Mohanlal in some of the critically and commercially acclaimed blockbusters in the late 80s and 90s.
One such evergreen classical hit was Chithram. The movie created wonders at the box office and ran for almost a year in some theatres in Kerala. In a recent interview, Priyadarshan said what late legendary director K Balachander told him about watching Chithram.

K Balachander asked Priyadarshan, do you know the difference between Mohanlal’s and Kamal Haasan’s acting. Priyadarshan replied that he has not noticed it. Balachander said, when Kamal Haasan is acting, the consciousness of acting in front of a camera will be evident from his face.
But when Mohanlal acts, it is as if the cameras are hidden somewhere in the room. When Mohanlal acts on screen it doesn’t feel like he is acting. That is his biggest strength. I have never seen him overact.
Even when some dramatic acting is required, he performs with finely measured meticulous expressions, said the legendary director. K. Balancher has directed some of the biggest superstars in the country like MGR, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Rajesh Khanna, Chiranjeevi, Sridevi etc.
