Most awaited Malayalam movies 2017
2016 will go down the annals of history as one of the greatest years ever in Malayalam movie. It will be remembered for the youngsters who stepped forward and showed their potential. Then Pulimurugan happened and the rest was history.
Last year, Mollywood made rich dividends with the so called limitations of a small industry and that has inspired many filmmakers to plan movies on a bigger canvas. Here’s a look at some of the most anticipated movies of this year.
Lucifer
One fine day Mohanlal and Prithviraj decided to make one of Mollywood’s biggest announcements that threw social media into a frenzy. Out of the blue came the announcement about Lucifer, a project that has been long talked about. But not even in the wildest of the dreams, one would have imagined Prithviraj to call the shots for Mohanlal, that too in his debut movie. Written by the multifaceted Murali Gopy and produced by Mohanlal’s home production house Aashirvad Cinemas, Lucifer is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies of 2017. Even though the makers have been tight-lipped, expectations are soaring high for the project. Neither do we know about the the genre nor about any other details, but one thing is certain-this movie will set the cash registers ringing like never before.
Priyadarshan-Mohanlal untitled movie
Last year the celebrated actor-director duo of Mohanlal and Priyadarshan delivered the all time blockbuster Oppam. If Oppam was a crime thriller, a genre which the master filmmaker has rarely tried his hand in, this time the duo are teaming up for an action movie, two decades after the days of Aryan and Abhimanyu. Bankrolled by Maniyanpilla Raju, this project will be made on a budget of 30 crores, an amount bigger than Mohanlal’s historic hit Pulimurugan.
Dulquer Salmaan-Amal Neerad untitled movie
One of the torch bearers of new age film making in Mollywood, Amal Neerad teamed up with young star Dulquer Salmaan last year for this untitled project. Though the first schedule was completed in September last year, the second schedule was completed only a few days back. Final leg of the shoot was held in the US. The makers have been tightly guarding the movie from the media. Dulquer is playing the character Aji Mathew in this movie scripted by Shibin Francis. Fans and cine-lovers have pinned high expectations on this movie.
The Great Father is without any doubt Mammootty’s most anticipated movie in recent times. Mammootty’s uber cool bearded look in the stunning first look posters reminded us of the actor’s Big B. Directed by debutant Haneef Adeni, this movie is bankrolled by August Cinemas co-owned by Prithviraj Sukumaran. The presence of a star studded cast in Arya, Shaam, Sneha, Mia and many other prominent actors have also raised the expectation levels of the movie. It was expected to hit the screens last year but got postponed owing to the post-production works, adding fuel to the fans expectations.
Moothon will mark the debut Malayalam movie of actress turned filmmaker Geetu Mohandas. The first look poster of the movie was released very recently. Hot and happening young star Nivin Pauly is playing the lead while many other big names are associated with this project. Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is writing the dialogues along with Geetu Mohandas while her husband Rajeev Ravi is handling the cinematography. Eros International and Bollywood filmmaker Anand L Rai’s new production house Colour Yellow Productions is funding this much anticipated movie. It will be exciting to see Geetu Mohandas-whose last film Liar’s Dice was India’s official entry to the Oscars- working with a commercial star like Nivin Pauly.
Oru Bhayankara Kamukan
Dulquer Salmaan’s yet another anticipated project is hit filmmaker Lal Jose’s Oru Bhayankara Kamukan written by Unni R. Dulquer and Unni R are teaming up again after the sensational Charlie. The actor will be seen as a typical ‘nadan’ guy in this movie which is set in a small town near a forest. Dulquer’s image is usually associated with an urban sophisticated guy but with Lal Jose wielding the megaphone, the actor is in safe hands to step out of his comfort zone.
Raja 2
Director Vysakh announced his next after Pulimurugan with Megastar Mammootty. Fans got more reasons to rejoice as the movie will see the return of the celebrated character Raja from the blockbuster Pokkiriraja (2010). Scripted by Udhayakrishna, Raja 2 will not be a sequel but only revolve around the titular character. Vysakh has assured that the movie will be made according to the tastes of today’s audience with the best available technical team. Touted to be the biggest in Mammootty’s career, this movie will be produced by Tomichan Mulakupadam. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see the return of Raja, the Madurai don with the famed handlebar moustache.
Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum
Last year Fahadh Faasil returned to winning ways through debutant Dileesh Pothen’s superhit movie Maheshinte Prathikaram(MP). It was the kind of cinema Malayalam film industry is known for – a heartwarming story with meticulous attention to detailing. So when Dileesh Pothen announced his next project Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum again with Fahadh Faasil in the lead, it was a true moment of joy for all movie lovers. Mahesh’s dear friends artist Baby Chettan and Crispin (Alencier Ley and Soubin Shahir) are also part of the cast. Like icing on the cake, the Rajeev Ravi is cranking the camera. Fingers crossed.
Apart from the ones mentioned in this list there are some other movies like Dulquer’s Solo, Nivin Pauly’s Sakhavu, Prithviraj’s My Story, Mohanlal-Major Ravi team’s 1971 Beyond Borders, the multistarrer Take Off etc.
Looks like another amazing year is in store for Malayalam movie lovers.
