Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light” Poised for Possible Oscar Entry
After its historic win at Cannes, Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light is generating buzz as a strong contender for India’s official entry to the 2025 Oscars. The film, already submitted to the Film Federation of India (FFI) for consideration in the International Feature Film category, awaits an announcement next week regarding its potential Oscar nomination.
This Indo-French co-production, produced by Petit Chaos from France and Chalk and Cheese Films from India, tells the poignant story of Prabha, a Mumbai nurse played by Kani Kusruti, whose life takes a surprising turn when her estranged husband sends her a rice cooker. The film also features Divya Prabha as Anu, her roommate struggling for privacy in a bustling city, and Parvati played by Chaya Kadam, a widow grappling with forced eviction by developers.
Distributed by actor-producer Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media, the film will first be released in Kerala under the Malayalam title ‘Prabhayay Ninachathellam’ this Saturday, before expanding to other major Indian cities. With its powerful narrative and international acclaim, All We Imagine As Light could mark a significant moment for Indian cinema on the global stage, including a potential entry into the prestigious Academy Awards.
