Kammatipaadam, a tale that unveils lost history before you

Kammatipaadam aka Kammatti Paadam, the Rajeev Ravi directorial film is now getting all the attention from the critics and audience here in Kerala. This P Balachandran scripted and Dulquer Salmaan starrer is really making an impact here in Mollywood. There are many reasons for that but what comes first is that it unveils a lost history before you. The fascination it gives us was fabulous and at the same time it gives us the feeling of loss too. Village changes to concrete jungle with time and people who lived there loses their identity as well with that evolution.

Rajeev Ravi had captured each frame including all the subtle details in it which gave the audience every beat of the change that happened over the years in Kochi specially. The film is a realistic tale from the perspective of the people who were marginalized when the industrialization took over Kochi and they are still finding it hard to cope with the changes that had come over time. Kammattipadam gives us a detailed account of how the changes came into effect and how this new Kochi was built on the marshy land of Kammatipaadam.

It also shows how some people made this Kochi, by standing on the lives of some others. They never cared to look down or may be look back as they are going skywards. It also shows us how the goonda gangs in Kochi becomes the tool in the hands of the real estate mafia and how they used the marginalized people who became criminals to survive in the rapidly changing city. The land mafia used the gangs in Kochi against each other and in the film it shows how the people from Kammattipadam turns against each other under the influence of these mafia.

Rajeev Ravi masterfully weaved each and every incidents in the movie as it complimented each other and the screenplay was too good as it had all the details. The writer had every details with him about the people of kammattipadam, their customs, beliefs and about how their life transformed over the years. Vinayakan and Manikanadan just lived as Gangan and Balan and Rajeev Ravi succeeded in bringing out the best from them.

Kammatipaadam is not just a movie, it’s a door which opens before you to the history of Kochi city and it tells you how the transformation that came over the years had affected the people there.
