Kurukshetra; Mahabaratha to be made in Kannada with Rana Daggubati as Bheema

Looks like mythological period films are the current favourites in Indian cinema. After the massive success of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali franchise, four such big budget movies have already been announced in the South; Mohanlal’s 1000 crore project The Mahabharata, Prithviraj’s Karnan, Arya-Jayam Ravi-Shruti Hassan starrer Sangamithra and the movie adaptation of Indian epic Ramayana to be produced by Madhu Mantena, Allu Aravind and Namit Malhotra.

According to latest reports, Kannada film producer and MLA Munirathna and director Naganna are planning to make another movie on Mahabaratha and the movie has apparently been titled as Kurukshetra. Touted to be the most expensive Kannada movie ever, Kurukshetra is scripted by writer JK Bharavi.

The makers are currently in the process of selecting the cast and crew for the project. They have already roped in Kannada actor Darshan for the role of Duryodhan and are in talks with Baahubali actor Rana Daggubati to play Bheema’s role.

A massive set will be erected in the Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad where most of the portions will be shot. The film will be officially launched on July 23 in Bengaluru and the makers are planning to release it in January next year.

The budget of this ambitious project has not yet been released. Some big names from India and across the globe will be collaborating in this movie. Kurukshetra will be heavy on the VFX and the filmmakers are already in the discussion with a couple of international special effects studios.
