I’m afraid of superstardom: Dulquer Salmaan

Dulquer Salmaan is currently on a high both personally and professionally. He recently became a proud daddy to a baby girl after five years of marital life with Amaal Sufiya. On the professional front, his latest outing CIA aka Comrade In America is doing great business. With that, it’s back to back hits for Dulquer in 2017 and he has once again staked his claim to be one of the most bankable actors in Mollywood currently.

The actor in a recent interview to Vanitha, a popular monthly, opened up about his views on superstardom. Despite being one of the most popular actors around, Dulquer is afraid of superstardom. He believes that superstardom is something that suits only those actors who have been extraordinary over a long period of time.

But now, an actor is crowned a star after the success of one movie. Dulquer Salmaan firmly believes that such overnight stardom will not last long. He wishes to be called as an ‘actor’ and not as a ‘star’ by the audience.

Dulquer is currently shooting for the final schedule of his upcoming bilingual Solo, directed by Bejoy Nambiar. He will be soon joining the sets of debutant Salam Bukhari’s Kochi based entertainer. He has also committed for Lal Jose- Unni R team’s Oru Bhayankara Kamukan and a mass entertainer with Pulimurugan director Vysakh.

Ganga, Balan Chettan and Krishnan turn one as Kammattipaadam celebrates it’s first anniversary

Ganga, Balan Chettan and Krishnan turn one as Kammattipaadam celebrates it’s first anniversary

It’s been exactly an year since Rajeev Ravi’s Kammattipaadam was released. One of the most discussed Malayalam movies in recent years, Kammattipaadam was a story of survival, friendship and discrimination. The movie has won numerous accolades but the fact that it is still a topic of discussion in social medias is clearly a bigger achievement.

When it was announced that Rajeev Ravi is joining hands with young star Dulquer Salmaan, expectations were obviously on the higher side. The promos indicated a gangster drama but what ultimately turned out was something more intricate and complex.

Kammattipaadam was no regular run of the mill gangster story. It was about friendship, discrimination faced by the Dalit community and showcased the reality of how Kochi city was urbanised on the grounds of Kammattipaadam. The layered narrative, top-notch detailing and stunning performances from the lead actors elevated the movie to a whole new level.

Balan chettan, Ganga and Krishnan struck a chord with the audience. Vinayakan and debutant Manikandan Achari clearly overshadowed Dulquer Salmaan but due respect to him for giving space to other actors even after being such a big star. They deservedly won the Kerala State Film Award for best actor and best second actor respectively.

Rajeev Ravi’s story was developed into a no-nonsense screenplay by P Balachandran. Veteran Madhu Neelakandan showed the unseen side of Kochi city in a different dimension. It was a daring attempt from Rajeev Ravi to stay away from the usual potboilers and yet make commercially viable films. Kammattipaadam is regarded one of the finest regional movies to have released in Indian cinema in 2016.

Aditi Singh is a properly fleshed out strong female character, a kind of role that one rarely comes across in mainstream cinema these days. Heard that Basil Joseph and his team scouted for long before they found Wamiqa and what a choice that has proven to be. Her expressive eyes, charm and the rage that she exudes is what makes her perfect for the role of Aditi Singh.

Godha sends out a strong statement on women’s empowerment. There is this terrifically enacted scene featuring Aditi and Das, where she fights tears and informs him about how her brother is forcing her to get married. Aditi asks, “how big can a girl dream?“. Das has no answer to that but the movie shows that ‘sky is the limit’ if girls break the shackles. She is a victim of the patriarchal society, but chooses not to be tied down and runs away. Just loved the way how Basil and writer Rakesh Mandoti smartly staged the climax with no word about her relationship with Das.

Aditi wants to wrestle, she wants to live on her own, she wants to prove what girls are capable of. Wamiqa breathes life into what was written on paper and she deserves all the appreciation that is coming her way. Looking forward to more from this wonderful actress.

Achayans Review: Another disappointing Jayaram movie

For sometime now, Jayaram has been in awful form. He has failed repeatedly to get back to his old self, the Jayaram who was a favourite for the families. Achayans is his latest attempt to get back to winning ways.

Achayans is his third film with Kannan Thamarakkulam. The movie, written by Sethu has an ensemble cast that comprises of Unni Mukundan, Prakash Raj, Amala Paul, Anu Sithara, Sshivada Nair, Adil Ibrahim, Sanju Sivaram and many others. So, does Achayans entertain you as the makers had promised. Let’s see..

Achayans Review rating report, achayans malayalam movie, achayans hit or flop, jayaram flop movies, malayalam movie 2017,

Roy Thottathil (Jayaram) along his brothers Tony (Unni Mukundan), Aby (Adil Ibrahim) and their common friend Rafi (Sanju Sivaram) are out on a trip. The story takes a turn when they come across two girls Ritha (Amala Paul) and Prayaga (Anu Sithara). What follows is a mishmash of events that is supposed to be thrilling.

Apart from their stylish looks, none of the actors have substantial roles to perform. Jayaram does not have anything significant to do while Prakash Raj is wasted in a poorly written role. Amala Paul as the tomboyish Rita and Unni Mukundan as the alcoholic Tony failed miserably. All the other actors just fill up the background space.

Achayans Review rating report, achayans malayalam movie, achayans hit or flop, jayaram flop movies, malayalam movie 2017,

Sethu’s screenplay is sluggish with some unnecessary subplots. There is forced humour, needless songs and whole lot of melodrama. Kannan Thamarakkulam’s beaten to death film making style, Gopi Sunder’s loud music and the mediocre performances make Achayans a tiresome watch.

Kannan Thamarakkulam and writer Sethu should have tried to bring something novel after managing to bring such a big cast on board. In a nutshell, we won’t recommend anyone to watch Achayans. Can be easily skipped.
