Director Kamal’s son Jenuse Mohammad makes his directorial debut

0

Kamal is one of the most celebrated directors of Malayalam film industry with an impressive number of super duper hit movies in his bag. Kamala is looking to pass his legacy to his son Jenuse Mohammad who is currently working on his first ever movie as a director. The movie is named 100 Days of Love and has Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menon as the principal roles. Dancer cum actor Vineeth, Sekhar Menon and Praveena play the other crucial roles in the movie.

As indicated by the name, the movie fits into the category of romance. Dulquer Salman appears in the movie as a column writer who lives in Bangalore with his best friend played by Sekhar Menon.  He meets a girl while having a day out with his best friend.  He seems to take an inexplicable interest in the girl about whom he hardly knows anything. This creates an uneasy feeling of curiosity in his mind. The movie describes the hundred days of his life after their first meeting and how they become friends which later pave way for the love. There is an element of suspense hidden in the movie as it gradually unfolds the different aspects Nithya Menon’s character.

Dulquer Salman and Nithya Menon worked in Bangalore Days together though they were not paired opposite each other in the movie.  This may come as a shock to some fans but Vineeth allegedly plays father to Nithya in the movie which is a daring step from Vineeth. Bangalore is an important factor of the movie as it serves as the driving force for  most of the writings  by the protagonist ( Dulquer Salman). It depicts the life in Bangalore realistically without relying on any forms of exaggeration. While one may tend to compare the movie with another Bangalore based movie Bangalore Days which also had Bangalore as the background, both movies are in opposite zones when it comes to plot.

Jenuse Mohammad has willingly doubled his challenge by taking the script work of the movie in his own hands which is a true sign of his innate talent.  Govind Menon will compose the music if the movie while Santhosh Varma, Vibin Ram and Rafeeq Ahammed pens down the lyrics. Pratheesh Varma will take care of Cinematography and the editing department will be managed by Sandeep Kumar. Shafeer Sait and KV Vijaykumar Palakunnu will join hands to produce the movie under Aishwarya Banners. Jenuse Mohammad commented that his father has been a source of inspiration throughout the making of the movie.  He also said directing a movie is a dream comes true moment for him.We will have to wait till November to see how his dream pays him off since the movie is planned for a November release

Apothecary Review

0

After Melvilasam, Madhav Ramadasan is back with his new movie Apothecary which deals with a subject of high importance namely contemporary medical system. Suresh Gopi who is deemed in general as an action hero is seen in completely different avatar in the movie. The movie also sets the stage for the return of Abhirami who was not seen in movies for the past few years.

The plot is build up on the character Dr.Vijay Nambiar who is the main protagonist of the movie. The film uses the technique of flash back to elaborate on the plot. We are first introduced to Vijay Nambiar who is in a coma state after a serious accident which is ensued by a severe brain injury. We then go back to the past of Vijay Nambiar where several facts are revealed which form s the main theme of the movie. Vijay Nambiar is a skilled neurosurgeon who renders his service to Apothecary, a popular hospital. His spouse Nalini Nambiar (which is played by Abhirami) is a gynecologist in the same hospital.

Vijay is an ardent follower of medical ethics and does not use his professions as a means to reap benefits at the cost of patients. But unfortunately, the hospital does not read along the lines of Vijay as it is a private hospital and look on medical field as a sort of business. The hospital authorities exert pressure on Vijay to conduct some experiments on patients without their knowledge which Vijay refuses to do at first.  But, as they tighten their grip on Vijay he finds no other option but to yield to their demands. He performs highly dangerous experiments on a number of patients including Subi Joseph and Prathapan. We get a detailed description how the hospital takes advantage of poor and illiterate people through the character Subi who visits ICU to have a look at Dr. Vijay. He recalls how he reached the hospital with  severe damage to facial nerves and  how he  along with  others were  made the scapegoat for the hospital partially because his family was too poor to raise the money for the treatment and partially because of their illiteracy.

The movie then focuses on the mental state of Dr. Vijay as he finds it hard to justify his actions even to himself.  The horrifying truth gets the better of him and he is disgusted with the present situation in which he is trapped. He falls prey to the state of delirium which causes him to see different patients who have been used for the tests. This accounts to his accident which nearly costs him his life.  But, he comes back to life after he comprehends that while his test may  have destroyed the lives of few patients or even to lead to the death of a very few, his test have also aided him in saving lives of many patients.  This thought induces him with confidence and he soon leaves the hospital after recovering from the aftermaths of accident. He becomes a reformed man, ready to fight for what is right and quits the job in Apothecary and goes on to start a new organization meant only for charity. His wife and many other employees from Apothecary offer their support to him and join him in his new venture.

Madhava Ramadasan has come with a strong theme for Apothecary and he succeeds in bringing forward the far reaching consequences of business mentality displayed by the hospital authorities.  The film is truly a wake up call for those who work in the medical field and to others who put their own merits ahead of moral virtues.  Suresh Gopi seems to be tailor made for the role and it is nice to see him doing something out of his comfort zone. He does not overdo his expressions especially intense emotional scenes which keeps the character real and relatable.

Abhirami fits well in the role of an ideal wife who stands by his side and remains to be his strength. Asif Ali also has done a marvelous job as Prathapan though his role is small compared to that of Subi. However, the two actors that shine bright in the movie are Jayasuryan and Indrans, While Jayasurya throws light to pandemonium he goes through because of tests Indrans bring tears into our eyes as a helpless father who could do nothing except to watch his son suffer. Meera Nandan, Seema G, Nair, Neeraj Madhav and Kavitha Nair goes their hundred percent to their characters.  Madhav Ramadasan does not disappoint us with the movie. But at some points, it does feel as if he could have treated it better as it fails to keep up with the intensity with which the story is presented with. But on the whole, the movie is definitely a must watch movie which gives a much needed slap of reality on our faces.

How Old Are You Review

0

How old are you made it to the headlines owing to the fact that it was the return of the beloved actress Manju Warrier.  Ever since it was made public that Manju will be playing the principal role, fans were thrilled and overjoyed. This created considerable hype to this Roshan Andrews movie.

The movie analyses the life of an ordinary woman Nirupama Rajeev (Manju Warrier). She lives with her husband Rajeev Narayanan (Kunchacko Boban) and her daughters Lakshmi Rajeev(Amritha Anil). Nirupama is a Revenue Department employee and Rajeev works in Akashvani. Nirupama’s only goal is to keep her husband and daughter happy and is willing to make sacrifices for them. But Rajeev is unhappy with her and always find fault with her. Even her daughter seems to take her granted and is even rude to her. Adding insult to injury, her age seems to unveil itself on her faces as she is 36 years old while Rajeev looks much younger to her. This lead to people mistaking him as her brother which also is a factor that attributes to the vexation of Rajeev. Even her daughter taunts her pointing out her age.

Neerupama feels helpless and isolated. Rajeev becomes more and more restless and irritated as he is unable to migrate to Ireland because of Nirupama. Her life suddenly becomes dramatic when she gets a rare opportunity to meet the President of India. But she finds the pressure too much for her to handle and she passes out in front of President. This incident spreads like wildfire on  Facebook and other social medias and she becomes a subject to laugh about. In the mean time Rajeev manages to secure Visa for him and his daughter and decides to go to Ireland without her. She meets her college mate Susan David while seeing them off who is an independent corporate woman. She takes little time to realize that Nirupama is holding herself back because of family obligations. She motivates her to bring back young energetic Nirupama who was immensely talented and had high ambitions in her life that moment of revealation brings drastic changes to her life.

Instead of resigning to her fate she decides to do something which will make her family and herself proud. She sets up a vegetable farm which will open the window of opportunities not just for her but for several other women like her also. Her concept gets a huge reception from different parts and finally. She gets a second chance to meet President. This time she meets him with confidence and Nirupama wins back the self respect as well as respect from others including her family. She leaves to Ireland to live with Rajeev and Lakshmi with a new found respect and happiness.

Roshan Andrews presents the picture of an ordinary woman who we can find around us. The film is not the story of a Nirupama. Nirupama represents all those women who lose their self respect and identity in their quest to gratify their families. Manju proves once again that she is one of the finest actors the Malayalam film industry has ever produced. Her long absence from movies has not affected her performance in any way. Her reaction when she has to correct that Rajeev is not her brother but her husband is a class in itself .The audience could read from her eyes the embarrassment and desperation she suffers when the strangers assume him to be her  brother only because her husband looks younger than her.

Kunchako Boban should be congratulated for daring to accept the role of Rajeev. He is not a bad man but  he never lives up to the concept of life partner as he leaves Nirupama all alone to face her problems. He does not even care about Nirupama’s feelings and emotions. Kunchako Boban has definitely made statement that he has come a long way from his chocolate boy image with his stunning performance in the movie. Amrita Anil who plays daughter to Manju has definitely made a good impression among audience. Lalu Alex, Kanika and Kunchan also have significant roles in the movie and they do leave their stamp on their characters.

Koothara Review

1

Koothara is a movie arranged by Srinath Rajendran with mystery as the predominant feature of the theme. Kollywood heartthrob Bharath shares the main spot with Tovino Thomas and Sunny Wayne in the movie. The  main female ledas of the movie are portayed  by include Bhavana, Janani Iyer, Gauthami Nair, Shritha Sivadas. The supporting actors  consist of Baburaj, Neenu Kurup and the others. But the star attraction iof the movie is obviously Mohanlal who does a cameo in the movie.

The film starts with Koobrin (played by Bharath) Ram ( played by Sunny Wayne) and Tharun ( Tovino Thomas) as engineering students who are not eager to comply to the rules and regulations. They create quite a havoc in the college and hostel which leads to a number of suspensions and ultimately to dismissal. They finally make bold decision to start their own business. But, their inexperience and low maturity comes to play as their business venture turns out to be an utter flop.  They meet an intriguing person by the name Usthad Saali (played by Mohanlal) who talks them into buying a fishing boat.  The movie is all about consequences this decision has on their lives.

It is good to see extremely talented Bharath back on a Malayalam movie after the trendsetting movie For the People. His character with “you do not tell me what to do” attitude makes him slightly annoying but cool at the same time. Sunny Wayne and Tovino Thomas complement Bharath’s character fairly well. Bhavana, Janani Iyer and Gauthami Nair have surprisingly little to do in the movie.  Mohanlal has only a small part to do but his character is the heart of the plot.

Mohanlal gives a fresh life to the character of Usthad. But the problem is that his character Usthad Saali is perhaps one of the least developed characters in the movie.  Despite of being the anchor of the story, the character does not really help the story in any way and makes it more complicated than it really is. The only saving grace of the character is Mohanlal himself, who tries everything possible to make the character special with his unparalleled acting abilities.

The story of the movie is not really bad but the overall presentation of the story lacks clarity. The first half is fulfilling with some genuine laughs and interesting events. But, the second half becomes dull and fails to carry on the same trend.  Cinematography work is definitely one of the high points of the movie and Pappu needs to be appreciated for his superb work  The prejudiced opinion on women is evident in the movie which at least some, especially women may find objectionable.   The movie is a below average movie with an underwhelming plot.

Samsaram Arogyathinu Hanikaram Review

0

The name of the movie forces us to think that the movie might be about someone who gets in a lot of trouble because of his inability to hold his tongue. But movie literally means what it says in the title as the movie deals with a rare speaking disease.

The story takes places in one of the most beautiful places in Kerala Thenmala located in Idukki The central character -Aravind (which is played by Dulquer Salman) is a talented sales representative whose ambition is to become a radio Jockey. He simply loves to talk to anyone who would listen to him.  On the other side, the female lead Anjana (which is played by Nazriya) is a juniour doctor who is more or less a private person.  The village gets  hit by a strange epidemics which is found to be harmful to the vocal abilities. It naturally causes the villagers to panic and how it gets hold of the lives of the central characters   form the main chunk of the movie. The yesteryear actress Madhubala also participates in the movie as Sridevi.  Arjunan, Chemban Vinod, Maniyan Pillai Raju, Vinu Chakravarthy are the other main casts of the movie.

Despite of Balaji’s Mohan attempt to keep the gravity of the subject intact, the plot outline is too trivial to take it seriously. A lot of farfetched and senseless d incidents do more harm than good to the movie. Besides, the second half is so loosely connected that once get the feeling that even director does not know how to work put things in the end. The idea to conjure a disease which audience are not very familiar with was good but unfortunately the overall presentation a far cry from actuality and pushes our willing suspension if disbelief to limit.

The biggest positive of the movie is Dulquer- Nazriya who definitely is one of the cutest pair in the Malayalam film industry. Dulquer delivers a fair performance even though he seems to lose his grip in a few occasions.  He suits well in the character who is sweet, innocent and fun loving person. It is somewhat refreshing to see Nazriya in a role of self observer since most of her characters have portrayed her as bubbly and pleasure-seeking girl. It is great to see Madhubala back on Malyalam movies. The supporting characters are merely to add to the length of the movie as they do nothing to elevate the significance of the plot.  The credit must be given where it is due.

Balaji Mohan has views something innovative and entertaining but the film is weak in the creative aspects which mars the beauty of the concept.

Cast : Dulquer Salmaan, Nazriya Nazim

Another main point with regard to the movie is that South Indian actress Nandini will make a comeback through this movie. Vellimoonga Review

0

Vellimoonga is a political comedy which scrutinizes the different aspects of politics with Biju Menon in the central role. Mammachan’s (played by Biju Menon) father is an ardent follower of Gandhiji. He serves everyone with selfless attitude.Unfortunately he passes away unexpectedly and leave  Mammachan  and the other members of the  family in financial crisis. Mammacham takes the responsibility of the family but is unable to fix the problem of severe monetary issues which is haunting him and his family.

But money is not the only factor that bothers him. He is in his early 40s but he is yet to find his soul mate. Mammachan realizes that the financial situation of his family is getting worser and worser every single day. He is desperately in need for something that would take him and his family out of this miserable situation. Soon enough he becomes aware of the fact that politics has an entirely different side to it which could be extremely profitable if you have a wise strategy. He officially joins a party and kicks off his life as a politician.

Tony (which is portrayed by Aju Varghese) is a true-hearted friend and adviser provides him with all the support he needs. Mammachan understands that politics is not as easy as he imagined it to be.  He adopts different methods so as to secure a place in politics. On the other hand he meets Lisa (played by Nikki Galrani) and is immediately struck by the love at first sight. He conveniently ignores the fact that he is a bit too old for the girl and makes up his mind to marry her.  But, he later learns that she is the daughter of his school life crush played by Lena and it makes his love life problematic. Mammachan’s life becomes eventful as she pursues success both in his political and love life.

Vellimoonga maintains the tone of humour right from the beginning to the end. Director Jibu Jacob and the script writer Joji Thomas deserve applause for the clever use of comic elements without forcing it on us. Biju Menon is perfect as Mammachan. The high point of his character is that he is not essentially good or bad. He is adorably cunning which makes the character lovable and interesting.

Aju knows his part well as a fair amount of comic sequences is created from his interactions with Mammachan.  Nikki Garani makes the most out of  the limited options she has in the movie. K.P.A.C Lalitha, as usual, excels in her role as Mammachan’s  caring mother. The other main casts of the film including Siddhique, Tini Tom, Lena, Kalbhavan Shajon Sunil Sukhada rise up to occasion as their character make significant contibutuions to the main thread. Asif Ali’s guest appearance is the wow moment of the movie.  The songs of the movie are good especially the song Lalee la li is quite popular as it matches up to the jovial mood of the film.

Overall Vellimoonga is a movie which will bring a smile of satisfaction on our faces.

Director : Jibu Jacob
Release Date : 25/09/2014
Cast : Bijumenon, Nikki Garani

Drishyam Review

0

Today the movie Drishyam was released and at the very beginning of this review we have to say that this December 19 will be marked in the history of Mollywood as it had given us one of the best ever film made in Malayalam film industry. From the above sentence itself you all have assumed what may be the quality of this film. Yes, it is indded one of the best ever and Jeethu Joseph-Mohanlal team had delivered a real classic or a gem of a film to the film lovers of Kerala. Before the release of this film it had not created much hype and it was marketed as a feel good family film. But there was hope as Jeethu joseph’s last film Memmories is a big hit and Mohanlal is always the man on whom malayali audience pin their hopes on forever.

Drishyam tells the story of an ordinary man named George Kutty played by Mohanlal and about his family including his wife and two daughters played by Meena, Ansiba Hasan, Esther respectively. George kutty is the owner of a local cable TV set up in his village of Rajakkadu and leading a happy family life. But an interesting turn of events happens in his life when his daughter and wife accidently kills a boy who came to threaten them with a mobile clip of the elder daughter which he had taken during a study camp in which she had took part. That boy happens to be the son of a highly ranked police officer and also a high official in the business field. For George kutty his family is everything and the film shows us how he faces this problem and saves his family.

Mohanlal as George kutty was at his natural best and he reminds us of the comeback made to cricket field by someone like Sachin Tendulkar after an injury lay off or a small period of lack of form or something. Before Drishyam Mohanlal had 2-3 flopes and he had made a terrific comeback as an actor and as a star through his flick. Actors like Kalabhavan Shajon, Meena, Roshen Basheer, Asha Sharath, Esther Anil, Siddique, Ansiba Hasan etc were just brilliant and Shajon was quite exceptional as the cruel police constable. Asha Sharath was another show stealer and it was her best till date.

The DOP by Sujith vasudev and Ani Johnson’s songs were superb. But the real star in this flick is the script written by Jeethu Joseph along with the terrific performance of Mohanlal and he once again showed us that why he is been called as the complete actor. It is a family film and thriller at the same time. The climax portion was unbelievable and we bet that you had never witnessed such a great climax in mollywood and the standing ovation people gives after the film is amazing to hear and watch.

We recommend all of you to go for it as it is a must watch and have to say that if you miss this you were probably missing the best malayalam film of the decade or may be the best in Indian cinema of the last 5 years at least.

Director : Jeethu Joseph
