Renowned playback singer P. Jayachandran, whose voice resonated with music lovers across generations, passed away on Thursday at a private hospital in Thrissur. The 80-year-old music icon had been battling cancer for some time. Known for his soulful renditions and romantic melodies, Jayachandran leaves behind a legacy spanning over six decades and more than 16,000 songs across Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi.

His funeral will take place on Saturday at his residence in Chendamangalam, Kochi. He is survived by his wife, Lalitha, a son, and a daughter.

A Journey from School Festivals to National Recognition

Jayachandran’s musical journey began during the late 1950s when he gained attention at the Kerala State School Youth Festival, one of Asia’s largest cultural events. In a poignant coincidence, the singer breathed his last just a day after the conclusion of the 63rd edition of the festival, where his early talent was first recognized.

His breakthrough came with the song “Manjalayil Mungithorthi” from the 1966 film Kalithozhan. Over the years, Jayachandran delivered timeless hits in Malayalam cinema, including “Neelagiriyude Sakhikale” (Panitheeratha Veedu), “Madhuchandrikayude” (Anachadanam), and “Anuragagaanam Pole” (Udhyogastha). Jayachandran won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1985 for “Sivasankara Sarva Saranya Vibho” from the film Sree Narayana Guru. He also bagged five Kerala State Film Awards and four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, showcasing his versatility and talent. His collaborations with legendary composers like G. Devarajan, M.S. Baburaj, Ilaiyaraaja, A.R. Rahman, and M. Jayachandran enriched Indian cinema.

In 2020, he was honored with the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award for his outstanding contributions to Malayalam cinema.

Apart from singing, Jayachandran made his mark as an actor with memorable roles in films like Nakhakshathangal (1986) and Trivandrum Lodge (2012).
