It’s that time of the year when films from various languages across India are considered for the Oscar submission. The selection process of India’s Oscar entry this year is currently taking place in Kolkata. As per reports, 28 films are in contention this year, which includes three from Malayalam – ‘And The Oskar Goes To’, ‘Olu’ and ‘Uyare’.

‘Andhadhun’, ‘Article 15’, ‘Badhaai Ho’, ‘Badla’, ‘Super Deluxe’ and ‘Vada Chennai’ are some of the other popular films in contention. The selection process is said to have commenced on Wednesday and the results are expected to be announced on Sunday (September 22). Actor-turned-filmmaker Aparna Sen is the chairperson of the committee. Other members from the jury include Pratim D Gupta, Ashoke Viswanathan, Sujay Dutta Ray, Padmanabha Dasgupta and Debojyoti Mishra.

Indrajith wraps up first schedule of Kurup; Excited for next schedule with Dulquer Salmaan

Shoot for Srinath Rajendran’s ambitious film ‘Kurup’ based on the life of Kerala’s most wanted crimimal, Sukumara Kurup is progressing at a brisk pace. The film has Dulquer Salmaan, Indrajith Sukumaran, Shine Tom Chacko, Sunny Wayne and Sobhit Dhulipala as part of the cast. Indrajith, who plays a police officer in the film, has wrapped up the first schedule of shoot. He will be heading to North India for the leg of shoot, where he will be sharing screen space with Dulquer Salmaan. The two actors have never acted together, so there is an excitement around it.

‘Kurup’ has its story penned by Jithin K Jose and screenplay written by KS Aravind and Daniel Sayooj Nair. Nimish Ravi of ‘Luca’ fame is cranking the camera and Sushin Shyam handles the music department. National award winners Vivek Harshan (editor) and Vinesh Banglan (art director) are also part of the technical crew. It is being produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s own production house, Wayfarer Films and M Stars.

Joju George opts out of Prathi Poovankozhi; Rosshan Andrrews to make his acting debut

Director Rosshan Andrrews’ new film ‘Prathi Poovankozhi’ had gone on floors recently. The film is scripted by Unni R. Manju Warrier plays the lead role in the film. Anusree and ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ fame Grace Antony are also there in prominent roles. Earlier the makers had decided to cast Joju George in an important role. However, the latest we hear is that Joju has opted out of the film and instead director Rosshan himself will be playing this role. If it turns out to be true, Rosshan will be making his acting debut with this film.

Unni R has scripted ‘Prathi Poovankozhi’ based on one of his short stories of the same name. The original story is actually a satire that looks into the current socio-political setting from a different perspective. The film will have Manju Warrier and Ansuree playing the roles of sales girls who work in a textile shop. The cast also includes Saiju Kurup, Alencier Ley Lopez and ‘Marimayam’ Sreekumar among others.

G Balamurugan is the cinematographer and Gopi Sunder is handling the music. It is being produced by Gokulam Gopalan under the banner of Sri Gokulam Films. Shoot is currently progressing in Kottayam.

As we already know, Vijay’s next after ‘Bigil’ will be directed by the two-film-old Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film is said to be a completely different attempt from the usual mass entertainers that Vijay does. While shoot is scheduled to begin next month, the film’s audio rights have already been acquired by Sony Music South for a huge price. It is a said that Sony bagged the rights for the biggest price ever for a Tamil film.

‘Thalapathy 64’ has young sensation Anirudh Ravichander as the composer. It marks his second time collaboration with Vijay after ‘Kaththi’. Much is expected from Anirudh this time as his goosebumps inducing score and songs in ‘Kaththi’ had become a huge rage then. Sony allotting such a record price for the music rights even before the start of shoot is a testament to the kind of expectations on Anirudh-Vijay combo.

‘Thalapathy 64’ is reportedly shaping up as a gangster thriller. The makers are currently in talks with actors like Vijay Sethupathi and Malavika Mohanan to play important roles in the film. While Sethupathi is being considered to play the villain’s part, Malavika has apparently been approached to pair up with Vijay. Malayalam actor Antony Varghese is also said to be a part of the film.

Cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan, editor Philomin Raj, Stunt Silva and art director Satheesh Kumar form the film’s core technical crew. Xavier Britto, who had earlier produced Vijay’s films like ‘Deva’, ‘Rasigan’ and ‘Sendhoorapandian’, is backing ‘Thalapathy 64’ as well.

Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz to start rolling only next year

Even before going on floors, there is a massive hype surrounding Mohanlal’s directorial debut film ‘Barroz’. As informed earlier by the makers, it is an ambitious fantasy film that has been planned on a grand scale. Pre-production works have already commenced in Goa and in Navodaya Studio, Kochi. The film has been planned to be shot in exotic locations in Goa, Portugal and some other foreign countries.

Aashirvad Cinemas, the makers of ‘Barroz’ is conducting an event in Kochi on Sunday. It has been planned as a launch event where the film’s cast and crew will be introduced. The film’s lead actress and music director will be announced in the event. It is learnt that a 14-year-old from Los Angeles will be playing the female lead and music will composed by the teenage child prodigy Lydian Nadhaswaram.

‘Barroz’ is scripted by Jijo Punnoose, the visionary filmmaker who made India’s first 3D film ‘My Dear Kuttichathan’. It is the story of Barroz, a mythical figure who was the gaurdian of Vasco da Gama’s valuable treasures for 400 years. Besides directing the film, Mohanlal is also playing the titular character.
Earlier, it was also announced that Spanish actors Rafael Amargo and Paz Vega will be part of ‘Barroz’.
Rafael Amargo will be essaying Vasco Da Gama’s part in the film. Since it is a global story, several other foreign actors will be acting in the it.

Priyadarshan’s magnum opus work ‘Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham’ is currently in the post-production phase. Since the film requires extensive VFX and CG, the makers have allotted nearly a year for it. If things turn out as per plans, the film will be released worldwide in multiple languages by summer 2020.

Meanwhile, it is rumoured that an exclusive teaser of the film will be screened tomorrow for selected invitees at a function organized by Aashirvad Cinemas. The production house is conducting an event in Kochi on Sunday. It has been planned as the launch event of Mohanlal’s directorial debut ‘Barroz’ where the film’s cast and crew will be introduced. At the event, more details about ‘Marakkar’ are also expected to be revealed.

‘Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham’ has Mohanlal playing the lead role of Kunjali Marakkar IV. The cast also includes several other big stars from across the country. Suniel Shetty, Arjun Sarja, Keerthy Suresh, Ashok Selvan, Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Prabhu, Mukesh, Fazil, Siddique, Manju Warrier, Baburaj, Nedumudi Venu, Hareesh Perady, Nandu, Innocent, Ganesh Kumar, Suresh Kumar and many others are part of the film.

‘Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simham’ is said to be made on a budget of around Rs 100 crores. Mohanlal’s Aashirvad Cinemas, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment are jointly producing the film.

Veteran director Kamal’s new film ‘Pranaya Meenukalude Kadal’ starring a bunch of newcomers is gearing up to hit screens next month. As the release date is closing in, the makers have released a new song online. The track titled ‘Kavarathi’ is composed Shaan Rahman and rendered by Lekshmi S Nair, Anjali Anand and Global Public School chorus group. BK Harinarayanan has penned the lyrics.

‘Pranaya Meenukalude Kadal’ is a romantic film set in the serene isles of Lakshadweep. Gabri Jose, Ridhi Kumar and some other debutants play the lead roles. Vinayakan is also essaying a very prominent role in the film. Dileesh Pothan, Saiju Kurup, Kailas and many others are part of the film’s supporting cast. Director Kamal has scripted the film jointly with veteran John Paul.

‘Pranaya Meenukalude Kadal’ has Shaan Rahman as the music director and Vishnu Panicker as the cameraman. Shameer Muhammed is handling the edits. The film is being produced by John Vattakuzhi under the banner of Dani Productions. It is scheduled to hit screens on October 4.

Biju Menon’s new film ‘Adhyarathri’ is gearing up to hit screens. First single from the film has just been released online. The track titled ‘Onavillane’ has its lyrics penned by DB Ajith Kumar and is composed by Bijibal. ‘Adhyarathri’ marks the reunion of Biju Menon with director Jibu Jacob. Just like the duo’s previous film, this one also looks like an out and out fun entertainer.

Sharis Mohammed and Jebin Joseph Antony of ‘Queen’ fame have jointly scripted the film. It also stars Aju Varghese and ‘Thaneermathan Dhinangal’ fame Anaswara Raja in major roles. Vijayaraghavan, Pauly Valsan, Sreelakshmi, Manoj Guinness, Sarjano Khalid, Biju Sopanam, Althaf and Chembil Ashokan are also part of the film’s supporting cast.

On the technical side, Sadiq Khabeer is the cameraman and music department is handlde by Bijibal. Sooraj ES is in charge of the edits. Central Pictures is producing and releasing the movie.

The official trailer of Vijay Sethupathi’s new film ‘Sanga Tamizhan’ has just been released online. The trailer features Vijay Sethupathi in a mass avatar, with glimpses of power packed action. The film is directed by Vijay Chander of ‘Sketch’ and ‘Vaalu’ fame. Vijaya Productions is producing the film, which is touted to be a complete commercial mass entertainer just like the director’s earlier two works.

It is said that Vijay Sethupathi is playing a dual role in ‘Sanga Tamizhan’. The film also has two female leads in Raashi Khanna and Nivetha Pethuraj. Others in the cast include Soori, Nasser, John Vijay Asutosh Rana and Ravi Kishan. Vivek – Mervin duo is composing the music and cinematography is handled by R Velraj. Praveen KL is editing the film.

Director Vijay Chander’s first two films – ‘Vaalu’ and ‘Sketch’ were disappointing that failed, both critically and commercially. So the director will be hoping to rectify his mistakes and a deliver a hit this time around.

‘Nee Himamazhayayi’, the first single from Tovino Thomas’ new film ‘Edakkad Battalion 06’ was released last week got excellent response from music lovers. The lyric video has already fetched over one million views. Now the makers have released the video of this beautiful track rendered by KS Harisankar and Nithya Mammen.
It is composed by Kailas Menon and BK Harinarayan has penned the lyrics.

‘Nee Himamazhayayi’ is basically the reunion of the ‘Jeevamshamayi’ trio of Harisankar, Kailas Menon and Harinarayanan. The same lead pair of Tovino and Samyuktha Menon feature in this song as well. Shot in Ladakh, the song has some lovely visuals captured by DOP Sinu Sidharth.

‘Edakkad Battalion 06’ is directed by debutant Swapnesh K Nair, a former associate of Omar Lulu, is directing the film. Actor-writer P Balachandran has written its screenplay. The film has Tovino Thomas playing the role of an army officer. Shrikant Bhasi, Thomas Joseph Pattathanam and Jayant Mammen are jointly producing ‘Edakkad Battalion 06’ under the banner of Ruby Films.
