Sam CS thrilled to compose background score for Odiyan!
Sam CS is currently one of the most wanted composers in Tamil cinema. He shot to fame with his stellar work in the Pushkar-Gayatri directorial Vikram Vedha. Soon after the release of the movie, he got plenty of offers, including from Bollywood for background score. But Sam didn’t take up any as he believed in contributing as a wholesome package for a movie.
However, when the offer for Mohanlal’s Odiyan came, he couldn’t refuse it. He was intrigued by the premise and the fact that he could use ancient ethnic Kerala musical instruments to compose for the movie. The Shrikumar Menon directorial has a theme that has rarely been experimented in Indian cinema. It is a mass-fantasy entertainer with a mix of action, romance and magical realism.
Odiyan, scripted by National award winner Harikrishnan is primarily about ‘odividya’, a kind of black magic. People who practice it are called ‘odiyans’. Odiyans lived in mediveal Kerala and this movie is set in three different timelines from pre-electricty days in the 1950s to 2000.
For Odiyan’s background score, Sam has used many ethnic instruments including a 6 feet long bamboo instrument to compose a piece. Interestingly, there was only woman who could play it and she was brought in to set tunes for a particular score. Sam’s ‘Odi.. Odi.. Odiyan’ score in the movie’s teaser has already become a hit among the fans.
Meanwhile, shoot for Odiyan is nearing completion. Entire shoot has been planned to be wrapped up by the end of April and is expected to release this year itself. The movie is produced by Mohanlal’s Aashirvad Cinemas.
