Vaariyamkunnan: Prithviraj and Aashiq Abu team up for a film based on Malabar Revolution
Prithviraj Sukumaran and Aashiq Abu are set to team up for the first time ever. They are joining hands for a film based on the 1921 Malabar Revolution. Titled as ‘Vaariyamkunnan’, the film is about Chakkiparamban Variyankunnathu Kunjahammed Haji, who was the leader of Malabar Rebellion against the British.
Announcing the project through his social media handle, Prithviraj has written,
He stood up against an empire that ruled a quarter of the world. Etched out his own country with an army that waged a never before war against the British. Though history was burned and buried, the legend lived on! The legend of a leader, a soldier, a patriot. A film on the man who became the face of the 1921 Malabar revolution. #Vaariyamkunnan.
Filming begins in 2021. On the 100th anniversary.
Zikander and Moideen are jointly producing ‘Vaariyamkunnan’ under the banners of Compass Movies Ltd and OPM Cinemas. The film is scripted by ‘Unda’ fame Harshad and Rameez. Muhsin Parari will be co-directing the film along with Aashiq Abu. Shyju Khalid will be handling the camera and edits will be done by Saiju Sreedharan. Art director Jyothish Shankar and costume designer Sameera Saneesh are also part of the technical team.
