Kammatipaadam wins award at the New York Indian Film Festival

Cinematographer turned filmmaker Rajeev Ravi’s Kammatipaadam was one of the most acclaimed movies last year. The movie, starring Dulquer Salmaan and Vinayakan in the lead roles won several accolades at the regional level. Now, after almost an year since it’s release Kammattipadam has won the award for best screenplay at the 17th annual New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF). Rajeev Ravi’s wife and actress turned filmmaker Geetu Mohandas informed this news through her official Facebook account.

Scenarist/ actor P Balachandran has written the screenplay of Kammattipaadam. The movie, from the outset looks like a gangster drama but it had many underlying layers that discussed about friendship, the discrimination faced by the Dalit community and showcased the reality of how Kochi city was urbanised on the grounds of Kammattipaadam. Apart from gaining wide critical acclaim, the movie was also commercially successful.

Movies from English, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati and Bengali languages were considered for the awards in the NYIFF. Mukthi Bhawan was selected as the best film while Konkana Sen Sharma won the award for best director (Death in the Gunj) and best actress (Lipstick Under My Burkha). K Kaladharan was honoured as the best actor for his performance in the movie Ottayal Patha.
