Dileep’s Ramaleela is fast progressing to become one of the all time highest grossers of Malayalam cinema. The movie continues to do terrific business at the box office event in its second week of theatrical run. Inspired by the overwhelming response from the audience, which includes the families as well, the makers have grabbed more screens for Ramaleela.
More centres have been added in Kerala and Chennai. It is also being screened in Mumbai, Pune, Bhopal, Ghorakpur, Surat, Noida, Gurgaon, Goa and Kolkata among other places. In Kerala, some theatres are running late night special shows to accommodate the heavy rush. Ramaleela, in all probability, will not be unaffected by any other film till the release of Mohanlal’s Villain, which is slated to hit screens by the end of October.
The last time we witnessed such a phenomenal response for a Malayalam movie was for Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan. Trade experts believe that Ramaleela has the potential to break all non-Pulimurugan records. Ramaleela’s success is even more special considering the issues amidst which the movie got released.
Ramaleela, directed by debutant Arun Gopy is a political thriller. Sachi has scripted this movie which features Dileep as Ramanunni, a public representative. Prayaga Martin has played the female lead. Senior actors like Raadhika Sarathkumar, Mukesh, Viayaraghavan, Kalabhavan Shajon and Suresh Krishna are also part of the supporting cast.
Shaji Kumar has cranked the camera and Vivek Harshan has edited the movie. Gopi Sunder has handled the music department. This big budget movie is funded by Tomichan Mulakupadam’s Mulakupadam Films.

This year the bridal show will be held on October 7 at thr Bhaskareeyam Convention Center in Ernakulam. This exciting bit of information was officially announced with a press meet held on October 3 at the Radisson Blu Kochi.
Celebrities like Radhika Apte, Mamta Mohandas, Beena Kannan and a 5 member model team will be gracing the ramp with bridal sarees, gowns and lehangas exclusively designed by Beena Kannan. The show will be hosted by celebrity hostess Rohini Idicula. Noted playback singer Amruta Suresh and music composer Alphonse Joseph will also be performing at the Beena Kannan bridal show. Entry passes are mandatory for attending the event.

Mohanlal’s Villain is arguably the most awaited Malayalam movie of the year. B Unnikrishnan is directing this crime thriller. Rockline Films is making their entry to Mollywood by funding this big budget movie. It has a huge star cast which includes popular actors from other south Indian languages.
Apart from Mohanlal, the movie also stars noted actors like Manju Warrier, Vishal, Hansika Motwani Srikanth and Raashi Khanna. All these factors have clearly heightened the expectation levels of the audience.
Director B Unnikrishnan through his Facebook handle has announced that the movie has been censored with a clean U certificate. The movie is now set for a grand release on October 27. Rockline Entertainments are distributing the film through Maxlab. In Kerala alone, they are eyeing to release it in a whopping 300+ centres. So, a massive opening is definitely on cards.
Villain is a crime thriller in which Mohanlal plays the role of a police officer. Director B Unnikrishnan had recently informed that it will not be a loud mass masala film. It is more of an emotional thriller that follows a very serious mood.
Vishal plays a doctor in the film and he is said to be playing a grey shaded role. Manju Warrier plays Mohanlal’s wife in the movie. Siddique, Renji Panicker, Aju Varghese and Chemban Vinod Jose are also part of the supporting cast.

Parava continues to do remain rock solid in the box office despite a slew of release like Ramaleela, Tharangam, Udaharanam Sujatha, Sherlock Toms and Solo. The extremely positive word of mouth is attracting audience to the theatres in large numbers. The movie was released on September 21 and took a stellar opening in the Kerala box office.
According to latest collection reports from our trade sources, the movie has grossed Rs 16.90 crores from its 14 days of theatrical run in Kerala. This is a very good figure which is only expected to soar upwards during the coming weeks. A gross of nearly Rs 17 crores from two weeks is really heartening.
Parava marks the directorial debut of noted actor Soubin Shahir. The movie tells the story of two adolescent boys who rear pigeons for racing, which is commonly practiced in the Mattanchery regions in Kochi. It has a big supporting cast which includes a host of newcomers and veterans as well.
Teenagers Amal Shah and Govind V Pai play the protagonists in Parava. Kismath fame Shane Nigam, Harisree Ashokan’s son Arjun Ashokan, late actor Zainudeen’s son Zinil Zainudeen, Siddique, Aashiq Abu, Indrans, Jacob Gregory and Srinda Arhaan form the supporting cast. Young sensation Dulquer Salmaan is also there in an extended cameo role. Its his presence that has done wonders for the movie in terms of its pre-release buzz and the initial pull.
Parava is jointly scripted by Soubin Shahir and newcomer Muneer Ali. Cinematography is done by Littil Swayamp, noted for his works in the popular music band Thaikkudam Bridge’s Navarasa series. Rex Vijayan has handled the music department.
Filmmaker Anwar Rasheed and Shyju Unni have jointly produced this movie under the banner of Anwar Rasheed Entertainments.

Tovino Thomas starrer Tharangam continues to get appreciation from both the critics as well as the common audience. The movie has an experimental nature and follows a pattern that is rarely seen in Malayalam movies nowadays. Many have showered praise on the rookie team for their courageous attempt to try something new rather than the usual run-of-the-mill stuff.
Celebrities like Lal, Basil Joseph, Chandini Sreedharan, Aparna Balamurali and many others have praised the movie through social medias. Recently, noted filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph took to his Facebook handle to pen down his thoughts on the movie. He has written that Tharangam deserves all the applause that is coming its way. He particularly lauded the perfomances of Dileesh Pothan and the newcomers.
Tharanagam is directed by debutant Dominic Arun. The director has co-written the movie along with Anil Narayanan. It is a crime-comedy that also has some very interesting fantasy elements in it. Tovino, Balu Varghese and newbies Santhy Balachandran and Neha Iyer play the major roles. The movie has an elaborate supporting cast that includes seasoned actors like Manoj K Jayan, Vijayaraghavan, Saiju Kurup and several other newcomers.
Most of the technicians associated with this movie are newcomers. Deepak D Menon has cranked the camera and Aswhin Raju has handled the music department. The movie is jointly funded by Tamil actor Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films and Mini Studio.

Malayalam film industry always been superior to other industries in terms of the quality of movies released here. Ours being a small industry has certain limitations in making big budget movies. The most expensive Malayalam movie to have released till date had a budget of just Rs 35 crores, which is nowhere near the investment in other industries. A popular notion in Mollywood was that one can never reap profits while making a big budget movie.
Last year, all these notions were broken by Mohanlal’s Pulimurugan as it set the box office on fire. When everyone, including trade experts, believed that it is impossible for a Malayalam movie to enter the elite 100 crore club, Pulimurugan did a whopping bussiness of nearly Rs 150 crores. One of the major factors, apart from Mohanlal’s stardom, that worked for the movie was its marketing strategies.
Producer Tomichan Mulakupadam invested crores for the movie’s promotions. Unlike most producers today, they did not limit the promotions to just the social medias. Advertisements were telecasted during the prime time serial breaks. In addition to that full page ads in newspapers were also given. It was probably the first time that full page ads were given for a Malayalam movie.
Tomichan Mulakupadam has done it once again for Ramaleela. Last day, full page ads were given in some leading newspapers to pull more audience to theatres. It is worth a mention that Ramaleela has already entered its second week of successful theatrical run. Inspite of that Tomichan Mulakupadam has invested lakhs to publicise his film.
Only a very few producers in Mollywood are willing to invest in promotions. Even superstar films are not having enough publicity which reflects on the lukewarm response during the initial days of theatrical run. Audience come to know about most releases only after the word of mouth starts spreading. Many good films have tanked at the box office due to the lack of promotions. So let’s hope that the makers realize the need for proper marketing sooner than later.

Recently, Mohanlal made a surprise announcement about his next project after the ongoing Odiyan. Ajoy Varma, a former associate of Gopal Varma and Rajiv Anchal is making his Malayalam debut with by directing this upcoming movie. He has previously directed a Hindi movie titled SRK.
According to latest reports, this upcoming movie will be a thriller shot mostly outside Kerala. Saju Thomas has scripted this yet-to-be titled movie, details regarding which are not yet known. Mumbai, Pune and Sri Lanka have been finalized as the major locations.
The movie will be produced by Santhosh T Kuruvilla’s Moonshot Entertainment and Co produced by John Thomas and Mibu Jose Nettikadan. The makers are planning to shoot in December and January. If reports are to be believed, Moonshot Entertainment will be funding another movie with Mohanlal, which is expected to be announced very soon.
The superstar is currently shooting for Odiyan, directed by VA Shrikumar Menon. It is a big budget film that has some an unique theme of fantasy and magical realism. Mohanlal’s own production house Aashirvad Cinemas is funding Odiyan. Actor Prithviraj’s directorial debut Lucifer and VA Shrikumar Menon’s magnum opus Mahabharatha are some of his other projects in the pipeline.

Shane Nigam has proven his mettle as an actor with his wonderful perfomances in films like Kismath, C/O Saira Banu and more recently Parava. This highly promising actor will be next seen in Eeda, which marks the directorial debut of National award winning editor B Ajithkumar. The first look poster of Eeda was unveiled today through the movie’s official Facebook page.
Shane Nigam and Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum fame Nimisha Sajayan feature in the poster. From the first look poster, it looks like a romantic story. Eeda is actually the Malabari slang for ‘ivide’ which means here.
Eeda, scripted by the director himself is a romantic film, revolving around the two lead actors. Shane Nigam plays an MBA graduated who works in an insurance company and Nimisha plays the role of Aishwarya, a college student in the film.
Nimisha’s character in Eeda will be entirely different from the one which she played in her debut movie. This upcoming movie also stars Surabhi Lakshmi, Alencier Ley, Manikandan Achari, Sudhi Koppa, Sujith Shanker and P Balachandran in supporting roles.
Eeda’s director Ajithkumar has worked as an editor in several acclaimed films like Ottal, Liar’s Dice, Naalu Pennungal etc. Pappu has cranked the camera in Eeda and songs are composed by Chandran Veyatummal and John P Varkey. Sharmila Rajaa is producing the movie under the banner of Delta Studio and Rajeev Ravi’s Collective Phase One will be presenting it.

He is currently shooting for VA Shrikumar Menon’s Odiyan following which he will join the sets of Bollywood filmmaker Ajoy Varma’s debut Malayalam movie. Prithviraj’s directorial debut Lucifer and the magnum opus Mahabharatha are also in the pipeline.
The latest buzz is that Mohanlal is likely to team up with director Arun Gopy of Ramaleela fame. Recently, the director and producer Tomichan Mulakupadam had met Mohanlal, photos of which are doing the rounds in social medias. There is still no official word about this film but it will be really interesting if such a project materializes.
Meanwhile, Ramaleela continues to do spectacular business across all the release centres. This Dileep starrer had to overcome several hurdles before finally hitting screens on September 28. Several noted filmmakers like Vineeth Sreenivasan, Vysakh, Boban Samuel, Lal Jose, Ranjith Sankar and Marthandan have heaped praise on the movie and its director Arun Gopy.
Tomichan Mulakupadam-Mohanlal team’s last outing Pulimurugan was a historic success. The movie emerged as the highest grossing Malayalam movie of all time by earning well over Rs 100 crores. If the successful combo team up once again, the audience can expect another fantastic money-spinner.
