Why is Villain shot in 8K resolution, B Unnikrishnan explains

We had recently reported that the first schedule of Mohanlal’s upcoming movie Villain, with director B Unnikrishnan was completed in Trivandrum. The movie has a star studded cast and an ensemble crew to handle the technical department.

B Unnikrishnan had revealed that Villain will be filmed completely in 8K resolution. It is the first Malayalam movie to be shot in 8K. Several questions were raised in social media groups about why such a high end technology was used when most theatres in Kerala are not even equipped with 4K facility.

The director himself has explained the reason behind shooting the movie in 8K. Apparently, most Malayalam movies are shot at 1.8K and then upscaled to 2K or 4K. This results in loss of quality and sharpness of visuals.

In Villain, he is planning to shoot the film in 8K and then bring in down to 4K or 2K, depending on the theatres, so that there will not be any sort of compromise on the visual quality of the movie.

Renowned cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa, famous for his works in movies like Nanban and Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya, is the DOP. He is using the Helium 8K camera in the Weapon series of the RED Digital Cinema Camera Company. The movie will have much significance to special effects and an international company from Poland have been roped in to handle the same.

Mohanlal is playing the role of an ex-cop in this movie touted to be a crime thriller. The actor was last seen sporting a salt and pepper bearded look for the movie. He had shed a few kilos before starting the shoot as his character in the movie
demanded a trimmer look.

Peter Hein has been roped in to choreograph the stunts along with Stunt Silva. The movie also boasts of a huge star cast in Manju Warrier, Tamil actor Vishal, Telugu actor Srikanth, Hansika Motwani and Raashi Khanna. Manju Warrier will be seen as Mohanlal’s wife while Raashi Khanna is playing a cop in the movie.

Music is composed by Oppam fame 4 Musics. Rockline Venkatesh, who has produced movies like Lingaa and Bhajrangi Bhaijaan, is funding this big budget movie.
