Aap Kaise Ho Review: A Comedy Thriller That Misses the Mark

Plot
The story revolves around Christy, who is all set to get married in a week. To celebrate his last days of bachelorhood, he invites his friends over for a party at his flat. The night is filled with fun and laughter until an unexpected incident involving a Bengali girl turns everything upside down. What follows is a mix of comedy and thrills as Christy and his friends struggle to deal with the situation. While the premise promises an intriguing blend of humor and suspense, the execution falters, making the plot feel stretched and unconvincing.
Direction & Screenplay
Vinay Jose’s direction fails to bring out the tension and humor needed for a gripping comedy thriller. The pacing is inconsistent, and many scenes feel repetitive or unnecessary. Dhyan Sreenivasan’s screenplay, which should have been the film’s backbone, ends up being its biggest flaw. The dialogues lack sharpness, the comedy feels forced, and the suspense elements never reach their full potential. A story that could have been an engaging dark comedy instead turns into a dull affair, leaving the audience disengaged.
Performances
Dhyan Sreenivasan, who plays the central character, delivers an underwhelming performance. His portrayal of Christy lacks the charm and depth needed to make the audience empathize with his predicament. Given that he has excelled in comedic roles before, his performance here feels lackluster and uninspired.
Jeeva Joseph, on the other hand, does a commendable job and stands out with his performance. His expressions and comedic timing add some much-needed relief to the otherwise bland screenplay.
Divyadarshan also manages to make an impression, delivering a natural performance that feels effortless. He brings energy to his scenes, which helps keep the film from completely falling flat.
Ramesh Pisharody, with his impeccable comic timing, is one of the film’s saving graces. His dialogues and expressions add humor where the screenplay otherwise struggles. Unfortunately, other actors, including Aju Varghese, Sreenivasan, and Saiju Kurup, are given very little to do, making their presence forgettable.
Technical Aspects
On the technical front, Aap Kaise Ho does not fare well. Akhil George’s cinematography is uninspired, failing to create the necessary tension or visual appeal. The editing by Vinayan M J lacks sharpness, making the film feel longer than its runtime. Scenes that should have been crisp and engaging drag unnecessarily, testing the audience’s patience.
The music, composed by Varkey and Dawn Vincent, is forgettable. The background score by Anband Madusoodanan and Varkey does little to enhance the suspense or comedic elements of the film. A strong BGM could have elevated key moments, but here, it falls flat.
Final Verdict
Aap Kaise Ho had an interesting premise but fails in its execution. Weak writing, subpar direction, and average performances make it a forgettable experience. While Jeeva Joseph, Divyadarshan, and Ramesh Pisharody try their best to keep the film afloat, they alone cannot save it from its many shortcomings. With a more refined screenplay and better technical execution, the film could have been a fun and engaging thriller-comedy. Unfortunately, it ends up being a disappointing watch that neither excites nor entertains.
