From just another fanboy to a scenarist in Vijay’s film; Aadai director Rathna Kumar shares his inspiring journey

Tamil filmmaker Rathna Kumar has a shared a video on his social media handle in which he is seen dancing to the tunes of ‘Pokkiri Pongal’ at the Chepauk stadium during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match. The latter half of the video shows actor Vijay thanking Rathna Kumar for being part of his upcoming film ‘Master’. Rathna has co-written the film’s screenplay along with director Lokesh Kanagaraj and Pon Parthiban.

Rathna Kumar has been a huge fan of Vijay since long. His journey from being just another fanboy to a scenarist in Vijay’s film is nothing but inspiring. At the recently held audio launch event of ‘Master’, the star thanked Rathna for collaborating with the Master team despite being a two-film-old director.

Rathna Kumar has helmed films like ‘Meyaadha Maan’ and ‘Aadai’. Both the films were well received and emerged commercially successful. While ‘Meyaadha Maan’ was a fun rom-com, ‘Aadai’ starring Amala Paul dealt with a more serious and daring subject. Upon release, Rathna had garnered critical appreciation for his filmmaking skills.

Vijay starrer ‘Master’ is in the final stages of post-production. The film was originally supposed to release on April 9 but due to the Corona virus outbreak, it remains to be seen if the date gets postponed. Even in the final stages before shoot, the makers have kept utmost secrecy regarding the plot or even the genre. It is learnt that Vijay’s character in the film is named as John Durairaj aka JD. He is a professor and also the Dean of Students Association in an arts and science college. Actors like Gouri Kishan, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Ramya Subramaniam and many others will be seen as students. The female lead Malavika Mohanan also essays a faculty member in the film. The makers shot the college portions in New Delhi.

Written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, ‘Master’ promises to be a different kind of film from what Vijay has been doing of late. The makers have repeatedly confirmed this. Even the recently released songs indicate the same. It is very unlike an usual Vijay film album. The songs composed by Anirudh sound fresh and most of them seem to be content oriented. The film has 12 tracks in the narrative out of which 8 have already been released.

Telugu superstar Venkatesh Daggubati is known for starring in a number of hit remake films. He has acted in several remakes of Tamil and Malayalam films. In a recent interview to a Tamil channel, he recounted about how he is blessed to act in remake films of stars like Rajinikanth, Vijayakanth, Suriya, Vikram, Madhavan, Mammootty, Prabhu, Bhagyaraj, Sarath Kumar etc.

However, Venkatesh is still wary of remaking Mohanlal’s films as he feels it is extremely difficult to recreate his performance. Though he has been offered several films of Mohanlal to be remade in Telugu, he declined most of them because he feels Mohanlal’s performance is unique, special and magical. But he still decided to remake ‘Drishyam’ after he found the storyline itself very fresh and interesting.

The Telugu version of ‘Drishyam’, which was titled as ‘Drushyam’, was directed by actress-turned-filmmaker Sripriya. While Meena and Esther Anil got retained, Venkatesh, and Nadhiya reprising the respective roles played by Mohanlal and Asha Sarath in the original. The film emerged as a big hit and was also one of the highest grossing Telugu films of the 2014.

After the phenomenal success of ’96’ Gouri G Kishan became an overnight sensation. But she took it slowly with sigining her projects. She will be next seen in the biggie ‘Master’, in which she gets to share screen space with Thalapathy Vijay. Gouri is playing a college student in the film that has Vijay as a professor. The actress feels that ‘Master’ has a very important story that needs to be taken to the public. According to her, it is not just socially relevant film but has many other interesting elements in it.

Gouri believes that ‘Master’ will showcase the different side of an actor in her. It is an important role and she will be seen sharing most of her screen time with Vijay. Interestingly, the film’s last shot was with Gouri. In a recent interview, the actress was all praise of director Lokesh Kanagaraj and team, and how they acknowledged her work. With Vijay, Gouri had a close bond and she was super impressed by the star’s humility. She also mentioned about her co-stars Malavika Mohanan and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj.

‘Master’ cast also includes Vijay Sethupathi, Arjun Das, Andrea Jeremiah and Ramya Subramanian.

Sathyan Anthikad’s son Anoop Sathyan has made a successful start in the industry by delivering a superhit with his very first film itself. His directorial debut ‘Varane Avashyamund’ has been received well, particularly by the family audience. Superstar Mohanlal recently got to watch the film and he apparently loved it. Anoop, who has nostalgic memories of Mohanlal and his father Sathayan Anthikad, has shared a sweet note on his Facebook profile. He shared an interesting incident from his childhood and connected if Mohanlal calling him to appreciate for his maiden film. The post reads,

Cut to- 1993, Anthikad:
I was in 3rd standard, had some intellectual conflict with Achan and decided to leave the house to live with ‘Mohanlal’ (I was his ‘propeller’ then). Achan found it funny, called him up right away, handed over the receiver to me and said, “Mohanlal wants to talk to you!”
I was not matured enough to handle the situation and so, I giggled☺
I still remember, how he was laughing then!

‘Varane Avashyamund’ had a lot of expectations prior to release itself. Gayathri Arun is a household name among the Malayali family audience thanks to the mega serial ‘Parasparam’ that was aired continuously for five years from 2013-2018. She played the lead character named Deepthi IPS and her performance in it was praiseworthy. She will be next seen playing a prominent role in the upcoming Mammootty starrer ‘One’.

Though Gayathri has previously acted in films like ‘Sarvopari Paalakaran’, ‘Orma’ and ‘Thrissur Pooram’, she feels that ‘One’ is her debut film. According to her, getting an opportunity to alongside Mammootty itself is like winning a lottery. Gayathri landed in the film unexpectedly after production controller Badhushah called and offered her the role. It is her performance in the TV serial that paved way to ‘One’.

Mammootty plays the role of Kerala’s Chief Minister in the film. Gayathri will be seen in a throughout role as Seena, who works in a private firm. It is a bold character and the actress has pinned high hopes on the film. Though ‘One’ is primarily a political thriller, it also has a family story in it. National award winners Bobby-Sanjay have scripted the film and it is directed by Santhosh Viswanathan.

‘One’ has the presence of a huge supporting cast. Joju George, Murali Gopy, Nimisha Sajayan, Sudev Nair, Suresh Krishna, Shanker Ramakrishnan, Alencier Ley Lopez, Mammukoya, Siddique, Balachandra Menon, Salim Kumar, Madhu, Ranjith, Mathew Thomas, Ishaani Krishna, Jayan Cherthala, Balaji Sharma and many others are part of the film.

‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ got released in digital streaming platform Amazon Prime recently and those who couldn’t watch the film from theatres are raving about it in social medias. Meanwhile, the film’s most popular song ‘Kalakkatha’ has crossed 10 million views in YouTube. As per the makers, it is this year’s most viewed Malayalam song as of yet.

The song composed by Jakes Bejoy is a very unique with a folk touch. A tribal woman named Nanchamma wrote the lyrics and sung the track. Due credits to the makers for handpicking such an original artist. The song proved to be a big booster for the film before it actually hit screens. As mentioned earlier by lead actor Prithviraj, ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ has one of the most unusual soundtracks for a mainstream film in Malayalam.

Written and directed by Sachy, it is about the conflict between a soon-to-retire policeman and a retired havildar. The film has a brilliantly written screenplay that addresses a lot of important socio-political issues. A Tamil version of the film is now on cards. S Kathireasan, who has produced acclaimed films like ‘Aadukalam’ and ‘Jigarthanda’ has acquired the rights. Details regarding the director and lead actors of the Tamil version have not yet been revealed.

The year 2019 saw the arrival of many new talents in Malayalam cinema. One of the most brightest among them was Anna Ben, the pretty actress who grabbed attention with her performances in ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ and ‘Helen’. Apart from her own films, Anna rates ‘Unda’ as her most favorite film from last year. She revealed this in a recent interview with a magazine. ‘Unda’ directed by Khalid Rahman and scripted by Harshad had Mammootty in the lead. The film which was inspired from real incidents told the story of a battalion of policemen from Kerala who get posted in Chhattisgarh on election duty. Unlike a regular commercial entertainer, it is a politically layered film that touches upon multiple issues which appeals to a wider audience. The film was well received by both the critics as well as the commoners.

Dulquer Salmaan’s recent Tamil film ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ (KKK) is continuing its successful run at the box office. After over two weeks of theatrical run, the film has grossed over Rs 2.57 crore from the Chennai box office alone. Interestingly, its 16th day gross is higher than the first day gross. Trade analyst Kaushik has tweeted,

‘KKK’ is released with very less hype but the film took everyone by surprise as it turned out to be a sleeper hit at the box office. Reviews and general talk in social medias have been highly positive which has reflected on the increase in audience count in theatres.

Along with Dulquer, ‘KKK’ has Ritu Varma, Rakshan, Niranjani Ahathian and Gautham Menon in major roles. Unlike what the promos suggested, it is not a regular rom-com. It is a con film with a thrill element. Debutant Desingh Periyasamy has written and directed the film. It is a youthful entertainer with some clever twists that keeps the audience engaged throughout.

Varthamanam new poster featuring Parvathy and Roshan Mathew out

The second look poster of Parvathy’s new film ‘Varthamanam’ has just been released online. Roshan Mathew and Parvathy feature in the poster. The film is directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Sidhartha Siva. National award winner Aryadan Shoukath has scripted it based on the current socio-political issues in the country.

‘Varthamanam’ has Parvathy playing a character named Faiza Sufi. She is a research student at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi. For the last few years, JNU has been grabbing nationwide attention over the several political incidents that occurred in the campus. The film is actually inspired from these true events. It was shot extensively in Delhi, Uttarakhand and some other North Indian states.
