Syam Pushkaran is a modern day genius: Prithviraj Sukumaran

Syam Pushkaran is a modern day genius: Prithviraj Sukumaran

Malayalam cinema is in a very interesting phase at present. There is an attempt to find a balance between big budget commercial entertainers and aesthetically superior films that are made on a comparatively smaller scale. While films like ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Madhura Raja’ have been successful in pushing the commercial feasibility of Malayalam cinema, ones like ‘Kumbalangi Nights’, ‘Ee Maa Yau’, and ‘Virus’ have got non Malayali cinephiles raving about their quality.

Prithviraj Sukumaran has been one of the flag-bearers when it comes to exploring big canvas films of different genres in Malayalam. In a recent interview, he was asked if he would be interested in doing films that belong to the other spectrum. Prithviraj, like always, had a very crystal and definite opinion. He confessed that he was a huge fan of such films and that he would love to be a part of it. He also opened up about his admiration for Syam Pushkaran, whom he considers a modern day genius in Malayalam cinema. Prithviraj even added that ‘Kumbalangi Nights’ and ‘Maheshinte Prathikaram’, both scripted by Syam, would be among his all time favorite films.

Syam Pushkaran is unarguably one of the most sensible and talented screenwriters in Indian cinema currently. A National award winner, Syam has been successful in breaking multiple stereotypes and thereby exploring previously told stories from unseen perspectives. His next is reportedly a Vineeth Sreenivasan starrer that will be directed by Saheed Arafath of ‘Theeram’ fame. He is also working on a script for Fahadh Faasil, which will be directed by Dileesh Pothan.
